Master Practical Skills
The Department of Applied Data Science is an academic hub, in partnership with other SJSU departments and industry partners, for promoting education and research in applied data science. In order to address the immense demand for data science professionals, the department launched an MS in Data Analytics program in August 2018.
This program provides students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds with the advanced education necessary to draw insights from real data and apply analytical skills to solve real-world problems. This program will prepare students to conduct high-volume data management, predictive analytics, and data visualization to solve real problems in their specialized career domains.
The MSDA program has 250 currently enrolled students, with continued plans for future growth. MSDA students earned their BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees in business, engineering as well as computer, natural, health, social and human sciences from Brown, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Cornell, CSU (Channel Islands, East Bay, San Bernardino, San Jose), Georgia Tech, Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Iowa State, Maryland, Michigan State, Oregon, Penn State, Stanford, UC (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Babara), Virginia Tech, Washington, Washington State, Indian Institute of Technology (India), National Taiwan University (Taiwan), Tsinghua University (China), as well as other U.S. and international universities.
The program features an interdisciplinary curriculum that draws on insights from mathematics and statistics, computer science and software engineering, business management, health science, social science, and natural science. The curriculum was developed and taught by SJSU professors and industry experts from prominent Silicon Valley companies.
