About e-mail on campus

No matter which of the SJSU e-mail systems you are using, there are really two ways to connect to e-mail on campus. You can use e-mail client software or you can access your e-mail using Webmail. How chose you access your e-mail is often determined by what network you are using at SJSU. SJSU has two networks. One network is the wired local area network and the other is the SJSU wireless network. These are really two very different networks.

Wired Network

Typically the SJSU wired local area network is used in either an office or on a lab computer that is plugged into the wall. This does not include computers located in student housing. Usually, folks wanting to use this network for e-mail are employees who use either dedicated workgroup software programs like Lotus Notes or e-mail client software programs like Outlook and Apple Mail.

Wireless Network

The SJSU wireless network is operated under contract by Comcast. Mail sending service is not provided on this network for e-mail client software programs like Outlook and Apple Mail. Therefore, Webmail is the best way to send and receive e-mail on this network if this is your e-mail configuration. Dedicated workgroup software programs like Lotus Notes usually do work on the wireless network! Usually, this type of software works no matter what kind of network it is used on, as long as the user is able to connect to the Internet. For all purposes, for using e-mail, the SJSU wireless network can be treated as an off campus network. It is worth repeating; Webmail is usually the best way, and often the ONLY way, to send and receive e-mail on the SJSU Wireless Network.

Webmail

Access your e-mail using these Web clients. These are links to the log in pages of the main campus wide e-mail systems. Be sure to choose the link appropriate for the e-mail system you are using. These links do not go to the various other e-mail systems that may be deployed in some SJSU organizational units. Support information may not be provided at these links.
