Apple Mail

This page is designed lead you to information you need to have to have to setup the Email client Apple Mail for Macintosh as a client for the main university Email servers. The instructions noted here were created on a computer running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. There will be differences with other versions of Mac OS X.

Before you Proceed

This what you need to know to configure Email client software:

Procedure:

  1. In Apple Mail, Under the "Mail" menu select "Preferences."
  2. Select the "Accounts" Icon then click on the "+" sign.
  3. This brings up the "Add Account" Wizard. Enter your Full Name and the Email address as well as the password of your account and click "Continue"
  4. Set account type to "IMAP" and create a description for your account. This is for you to tell what account this is and it can be any descriptor, like SJSU Email, enter your user name the password should appear as a row of dots, you can re-enter that here if you want, then click "Continue".
  5. If you are using imap.sjsu.edu the "Verify Certificate" may come up and say, "Mail can't verify the identity of "imap.sjsu.edu". This is a known issue, click "Connect".
  6. Set your outgoing server setting. You can also give this a description. Either use or do not use authentication as is appropriate for your server. Click Continue.
  7. Your computer should check the connection to the server. This could take awhile. In Outgoing Mail Security use the settings, if any, that are appropriate for your server. If in doubt, leave it set to the default and select "Continue."
  8. This brings up the Account Summary, check to be sure the settings are acurate and that the "Take account online" button is checked. Click on "Create"
  9. The account should now appear in the "Accounts" Panel of the "Preferences" Item under the "Mail" menu.
