Email Forwarding

UNIX

Forwarding Unix Email to another Email account
  1. 1. Access Zeus (Unix machine) using Telnet:
    1. Click on Start
    2. Click on Run
    3. Type telnet zeus.sjsu.edu and press enter. A screen will appear and ask for for your E-mail userid and password; enter them one at a time and enter after each one.
    4. You may be asked for your screen type - vt100 is the default; just press enter and you are in.
    5. The prompt will look like this: home>userid> (this is your 'home' prompt). You can now forward your mail. When you forward your mail, you are setting aside a buffer (storage) area that the Unix machine looks to for instructions. You are actually creating a file when you do this. The instructions in the file remain in effect until you delete the file you have created. The name of the file is: .forward
    6. Pico is a text editor.
  2. You are at this prompt: home>userid>
    1. type pico .forward and press enter (check the top of the screen and see the file name).
    2. at the next screen, type the full userid and domain name that your mail should forward to: e.g. jdoe@pacbell.net
    3. Ctrl and X to exit
    4. Yes to save the modified buffer (storage area)
    5. Press enter to write a 'new' .forward file
    6. You're back at home>userid> type exit to close your telnet session

Stopping Forwarding

UNIX

Removing .forward file
  1. Use Telnet to get to Zeus and at your 'home' prompt (home>userid>) type: rm .forward.
  2. Your .forward buffer (storage) area has been deleted and your Unix E-mail will no longer forward to another E-mail account.
  3. You're back at home>userid> type exit to close your telnet session.
