Dial Up with PPP

This page is a guide to computer configuration for users of SJSU Dialup Service.
Dialup and SJSUOne
San Jose State's free dialup server is only available to people who have an activated SJSUOne account. For more information, visit a brief introduction to SJSUOne.
Dialup and Vista
Steps to create your Windows Vista/Longhorn Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection:
- Click on the "Windows Logo" button located in the bottom left corner of Windows Vista/Longhorn taskbar.
- Click on the "Control Panel" button to the right.
- Click on the "Control Panel Home" link on the left side bar.
- Click on the "Network and Internet" option.
- Click on the "Network and Sharing Center" option.
- Click on the "Set up a Connection or Network" link on the left side bar.
- Select the "Set up a Dial-up Connection" option and then click the "Next" button.
- Enter the SJSU PPP phone number, 1-408-294-4113.
- Make sure that CAPS LOCK key is off and enter your Tower Card number, including the 00's as the user name and your SJSUONE password into the appropriate fields.
- Enter "SJSU PPP" as the "Connection name".
- Choose whether you wish to make this dial-up connection available for all users of your PC. If you are the only user of your PC, then do not change this option. Click the "Connect" button.
- Click on the "Browse the Internet now" to open your default browser or click on the "Close" button.
- Click on the "Windows Logo" button located in the bottom left corner of Windows Vista/Longhorn taskbar and click on the "Connect To" button to the right; you should see "SJSU PPP Dial-up connection."
Dialup and Windows XP
Follow the steps below to create your Windows XP PPP connection:
- From the main Windows XP desktop, click on the "Start" button.
- Click on the "Control Panel" button to the right.
- Within the Control Panel, click on the "Network and Internet Connections" icon.
- Click on the "Network Connections" link.
- Click on the "Create a new Connection" link under Network Tasks to start the Network Connection Wizard.
- Click the "Next" button to advance to the next screen.
- From the list of network connection types, choose "Connect to the Network at my Workplace." Click "Next" for the next screen.
- Select the second option to "Dial-up Connection" and then click the "Next" button.
- Enter "SJSU PPP" as the ISP Name. Click "Next."
- Enter the SJSU PPP phone number, 1-408-294-4113. Click the "Next" button.
- Choose whether you wish to make this dial-up connection available for all users of your PC. If you are the only user of your PC, then do not change this option. Click "Next."
- Make sure that CAPS LOCK key is off and enter your Tower Card number, including the 00's as the user ID and your SJSUOne password into the appropriate fields. Click “Next”. Your SJSUOne password must be current. Authentication will fail if your SJSUOne password has expired. - Click the “Finish” button to close the Internet Connection Wizard.
- You should now see a new “SJSU PPP” icon in the “Network Connections” window.
Dialup and Mac OS X
Configuring PPP for dialup access with Mac OS X 10.4. You must have a valid SJSUOne account to use dial-up. UNIX authentication is no longer accepted for dialup. Follow the steps below to create your Mac OS X PPP connection:
- Click on the Apple Symbol seen at the top left corner of the Desktop.
- Select ‘System Preferences’.
- Double-click on the ‘Network’ icon. (A network window opens up)
- Select ‘Location’ to be ‘Automatic’.
- Select ‘Show’ to be ‘Internal Modem’.
- Select ‘PPP’ among the 4 connection options.
- Enter the Service Provider to be ‘SJSU PPP’.
- For the user name enter your tower card number complete with all the zeros and your SJSUOne account ‘password’ in the spaces provided. Your SJSUOne password must be current. Authentication will fail if your SJSUOne password has expired. San Jose State's free dialup server is only available to people who have an activated SJSUOne account.
- Enter the Telephone number (408-294-4113).
- Click on PPP Options to open up a new window. Check your preferences to the options provided. Make sure to uncheck the ‘Connect using a terminal window (command line)’ option.
- Click on OK to finish the set up.
Dialup and Windows 2000
Follow the steps below to create your Windows 2000 PPP connection:
- Double-click on "My Computer" on the desktop and double-click again on the "Control Panel" folder. Double-click on "Network and Dial-up Connection" folder.
- A "location information" will pop up. Enter the Area code (408) and the phone number to be dialed (294-4113) and check the Tone Dialing option.
- Another pop-up window appears (Phone and Modem Options). Click on OK to proceed.
- Click on "Next" in the Network Connection Wizard.
- Click the circle next to "Dial-Up to private network."
- The next window will ask for the phone number to dial. The phone number you input is "408-294-4113." The country/region name and code should be "United States of America (1)." "Use area code and dialing rules" should be checked. Click "Next" button on the bottom.
- If you are the only user, then check "Only for Myself" in the Connection Availability window.
- For the connection name, input "SJSU Dial Up." Click "Finish" button on the bottom.
- For the user name enter your tower card number complete with all the zeros and your SJSUOne account ‘password’ in the spaces provided. Your SJSUOne password must be current. Authentication will fail if your SJSUOne password has expired. San Jose State's free dialup server is only available to people who have an activated SJSUOne account.
