This prestigious program honors alumni for remarkable achievements, including professional excellence, dedicated community service, and a commitment to SJSU’s values. Through the Spartans of Significance, we proudly showcase the diverse accomplishments of SJSU’s community, inspiring pride and connection among alumni, students, and friends of the university. This event goes beyond celebration—proceeds directly support the SJSU Alumni Association Scholarship Program, helping students achieve their dreams.

2025 Awardees

Judge Robert R. Rigsby
 Tower Award

Judge Robert R. Rigsby ’83

Robert R. Rigsby was appointed as an Associate Judge of the District of Columbia Superior Court in 2002. A trailblazer, Judge Rigsby became the first military judge to deploy full-time to an active war zone, earning the Bronze Star Medal. In 2024, SJSU honored his legacy by establishing the Judge Robert Ray Rigsby Law and Social Justice Scholarship. 

Ed Oates
 Lifetime Acheivement Award

Edward Oates ’68

Edward Oates, co-founder of Oracle Corporation, has had an impactful career as a software engineer and tech executive. After retiring in 1996, he channeled his passion for public science education by serving on non-profit boards, including at the San Francisco Zoo and SJSU. An entrepreneur and musician, Edward combines his love for business and music through ventures like Rock Your Business LLC and performances with his band, CHOC'D, supporting nonprofit causes.  

Bette & Dave Loomis
 Spirit of ’68 Award

Dave ’63 & Bette ’67 Loomis

Dave & Bette Loomis are active supporters of SJSU initiatives, including their remarkable contributions to the Record Clearance Project at SJSU. Together, they have supported this life-changing program that helps individuals overcome barriers to employment by clearing eligible criminal records. Their dedication has empowered countless lives, exemplifying the spirit of giving back to the Spartan community and beyond.

Robert Rivas
 President's Medal

Speaker Robert Rivas ’11

Robert Rivas, Speaker of the California State Assembly, has dedicated his career to championing California’s underserved communities. Raised in farmworker housing in Paicines, California, Rivas’ upbringing inspired his legislative efforts. He worked on affordable housing initiatives, workplace protections, and the nation’s first COVID-19 Farmworker Relief Package. Serving as a leader in California's state government, Rivas continues to advocate for environmental sustainability and equity.

Janine Pelosi ’06

Janine Pelosi, CEO of Neat, is a visionary leader in the technology industry with nearly two decades of experience. As Zoom's Chief Marketing Officer, she played a pivotal role in the company’s transformation into a global enterprise, navigating its IPO and extraordinary growth during the pandemic. Recognized as one of the world’s most innovative CMOs, Janine continues to drive innovation and mentor early-stage founders.
