Student-Run Programs (Fall and Spring)

Community Organizers are SJSU students who work at CAPISE to create and host programs for their peers. These programs happen throughout the semester, on topics related to Asian and Pacific Islander identities and social issues that allow CAPISE Community Organizers to create spaces of connection, community, and exploration for other students.

Asian Pacific Islander Fall Welcome (Fall Only)

Asian Pacific Islander (API) Fall Welcome annually brings together the SJSU Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community to welcome in the new academic school year. You can connect with campus resources, hear from API professors and staff, check out student performances, and find new friends in API student organizations. Free food provided.

Lunar New Year Celebration (Spring Only)

The Lunar New Year Celebration is held during the Spring semester to allow the SJSU community to welcome in the new calendar year and the new semester, and to learn about this cultural celebration observed by many people with heritages connected to East and Southeast Asia.

Day of Remembrance (February)

Day of Remembrance is a national observance of the World War II incarceration of Americans of Japanese descent in the United States. It is recognized nationally on February 19th, the date that Executive Order 9066 was issued and initatied this process. In 1942, the building currently known as Yoshihiro Uchida Hall on SJSU's campus served as a registration center for local Japanese Americans prior to them being forcibly removed to incarceration camps.

SJSU recognizes this day to acknowledge the Japanese American experience and the campus’ connection to it. It is important that we know our history in order to advocate for a more socially just society moving forward.

Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month (April)

Asian & Pacific Islander (API) Heritage Month (celebrated jointly with Arab American Heritage Month) is an annual month-long celebration of Asian and Pacific Islanders in the United States. (Nationally, this month is celebrated in May.) Throughout the month, CAPISE and other campus partners will host programs and events highlighting and uplifting the stories, histories, and experiences of Asian and Pacific Islanders.
