Faculty Writing Support

It can be challenging for faculty to make time for their research, scholarship and creative activity. We routinely partner with our colleagues across campus, including the Division of Research and Innovation, the Writing Across the Curriculum Program, and the Writing Center, to offer a variety of programs and resources to assist you in creating and making the most of your time to write.

Write@SJSU Faculty Writing Groups

  • Would you find it helpful to have regularly scheduled meetings to help you pace your writing projects and meet your goals?
  • Would you appreciate a comfortable place to share writing-still-in-progress with your colleagues?
  • Would it help to have a community of emotional and professional support as you work on your research, scholarship, and creative activity (RSCA)?

We would like to support faculty in forming their own faculty writing groups. Use this form to record your group members and your shared intention to support each other in your RSCA/writing. Please review the Faculty Writing Group Creation Guide [pdf] developed by our colleague Amy Russo, Coordinator of Multilingual Writing Support, as you work through the application questions.

Applications to form writing groups for Fall 2022 are due Wednesday, September 21st. We will notify you of your application decision on Monday, September 26th. Members of all accepted groups should plan to attend a brief orientation meeting scheduled for the week of October 3rd.

Faculty who develop and make an earnest attempt to follow a scheduled plan of writing group convenings will receive $25 in gold points. Forming and strengthening networks of support to achieve your goals is the main reward here, but we'd like to buy you some coffee or even a new coffee mug for giving this a try!

Writing Cafés

Our cafés can help you maintain dedicated writing time and make progress on chapters, journal articles, grant applications, and creative work -- whatever you're writing. We follow the successful and popular Shut Up and Write Tuesdays model, which includes a brief check-in, two 25 minute "pomodoros" of writing, and a shout-out of our successes. All San José State University faculty are welcome to participate, as much or as little as you'd like. Please subscribe to our Writing Café calendar for more information on our cafés, retreats and sprints.

Writing Retreat Program

Throughout the year, we offer both on campus and online writing retreats--time and space for faculty to sit and write, uninterrupted. Upon request, we can provide consulting (about library searches, research design, data analysis, and similar topics) as well as a critical-friend review of your manuscripts.

Time Management

The academic semester often seems to fly by, and we are often frustrated by how little we feel we have accomplished by the end of the term.  Please reach out to us if you would appreciate individual consultation regarding strategies to align your time with your priorities and improve your productivity.
