Scholarship Eligibility

• Applicants must be full-time students enrolled in an BA/BS/MA/MS studies at San José State University.

• Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at SJSU in the Fall and/or Spring Semesters of the current academic year and have at least one semester before graduation are eligible to apply.

• Transfer students from San Jose City College or Evergreen Community College who have been admitted to SJSU for the current academic year are eligible to apply.

• Applicants are required to have a minimum cumulative SJSU G.P.A:

  • Undergraduate students: 3.0

  • Graduate students: 3.5

• Continuing SJSU undergraduate applicants must have been at SJSU and have completed a minimum of 12 units to apply.

• Continuing graduate students must have been at SJSU and completed a minimum of 6 units to apply.

• Applicants must demonstrate involvement and active participation in:

  • the Chicano/Mexican community-at-large or Chicano/Latino organizations

  • worked for the betterment of this community

• Research essay must demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the philosophy, works and contributions of Dr. Ernesto Galarza by using his scholarship in the application research essay.  Citations must include the designated readings and additional citations that support the research in answering the scholarship’s essay prompt.

Finalists will be notified and must be available to attend the scholarship symposium at the designated time and date.  Scholarship recipients will be asked to submit a photograph for the program.
