Public Health as a Major
Public Health as a Major
If you choose to pursue a B.S. in Public Health, you will join a group of students dedicated to documenting, monitoring, assessing, and improving the health of all communities, especially those who are marginalized.
We currently offer a B.S. in Public Health and a B.S. in Public Health with a Concentration in Health Services Administration. See below for changes effective Fall 2020.
Please note: Students in the Public Health major are required to either complete 21 units of upper division electives or complete a minor. For students who decide to pursue a minor, their minor substitutes for those elective units.
New for Fall 2020 and Beyond
The Public Health program will be new starting in Fall 2020. Students will choose one of 3 pathways:
- B.S. in Public Health with a minor of your choice
- B.S. in Public Health with a Concentration in Community Health Education (application required - see below)
- B.S. in Public Health with a Concentration in Population Data Science (application required - see below)
New students will no longer be able to enroll in a B.S. in Public Health with upper division electives, or a B.S. in Public Health with a concentration in Health Services Administration.
Current students with catalog rights to these two programs will be able to complete their course requirements to graduate from these programs. Any current students wishing to declare the Health Services Administration concentration must do so before May 12, 2020.
Current students in the Health Services Administration concentration must meet with an advisor before November 1, 2020 to ensure they have a path to completion before all existing courses are phased out.
Criteria for Admission to Public Health
In order to apply, you must have completed at least 12 units of college coursework (at SJSU or another college). Students will be admitted based on their SJSU GPA or their All College GPA (whichever favors the applicant). See below for specific GPA requirements for the Community Health Education and the Population Data Science concentrations.
Requirements for students in other majors or undeclared students wishing to change their major to Public Health, with a minor OR a concentration.
We encourage students who are currently undeclared or in other majors to consider applying to the Public Health major. Starting for Fall 2020, the Public Health major offers three degree pathways (see above for catalog descriptions):
- B.S. in Public Health with a minor, or
- B.S. in Public Health, Concentration in Community Health Education (CHE), or
- B.S. in Public Health, Concentration in Population Data Science (PDS)
All three pathways provide students with an interdisciplinary background to public health, which is great preparation for public health careers or future public health or clinical degrees.
We have completed our application process for the Spring 2020 semester. The application process for Fall 2020 will begin after the Spring 2020 grades have posted. All students who have completed at least 12 credit-bearing units of coursework at SJSU or another college are welcome to apply. While there is no minimum GPA threshold to apply, the application process is competitive and in recent semesters, accepted students have had at least a GPA of 2.85.
To apply to either the Community Health Education or the Population Data Science concentration, the minimum GPA for acceptance is 3.4 if you have not previously taken any public health courses, or 3.2 with at least one public health course.
Requirements for current Public Health majors wishing to change their major to Public Health, with a concentration in Community Health Education (CHE) OR in Population Data Science (PDS).
Current public health majors can apply to either the CHE or the PDS concentrations, or switch between the two concentrations. We accept applications at the end of the fall semester for the following spring, or at the end of the spring semester for the following fall. Bear in mind that depending on your progress in the program, declaring a concentration or switching from one concentration to another may delay your anticipated graduation date. Therefore, we urge you to discuss your plans with an advisor before applying. The minimum GPA to switch to either concentration is 3.2.

Students who are currently SJSU students and have already completed at least 12 units at SJSU or another college are invited to apply to the Public Health major. Students will be ranked by GPA and those with the highest GPAs (either "all college" or SJSU) will be offered spots in the major.
Students who are currently Public Health majors and would like to declare one of the concentrations, CHE or PDS, are invited to apply to the concentrations. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required for acceptance into either concentration.
If we require additional information to process your change of major, we will be in touch with you via the email address you provide.
