Public Health as a Major

Change of Major to Public Health

If you choose to pursue a B.S. in Public Health, you will join a group of students dedicated to documenting, monitoring, assessing, and improving the health of all communities, especially those who are marginalized.

Current students can enroll in one of 3 pathways:

NON-PUBLIC HEALTH MAJORS: Criteria for Admission to Public Health

To apply, you must have completed at least 12 units of college coursework (at SJSU or another college). Students will be admitted based on their SJSU GPA or their All College GPA (whichever favors the applicant).  The minimum GPA required changes based on the applicant pool, in Spring 2022, the minimum GPA was 2.85.  In a prior semester, it was 3.10.  See below for specific GPA requirements for the Community Health Education and the Population Data Science concentrations.

To apply to either the Community Health Education or the Population Data Science concentration, the minimum GPA for acceptance is or 3.0.  In lieu of meeting the GPA requirement, a B or better is required in each of the preparatory courses: PH 104 for CHE, and PH 161 and PH 167 for PDS.

CURRENT PUBLIC HEALTH MAJORS: Adding or Changing concentration

Current public health majors can apply to either the CHE or the PDS concentrations, or switch between the two concentrations.  We accept applications at the end of the fall semester for the following spring, or at the end of the spring semester for the following fall.

Bear in mind that depending on your progress in the program, declaring a concentration or switching from one concentration to another may delay your anticipated graduation date.  Therefore, we urge you to discuss your plans with an advisor before applying
