1. Engineering Position

About the job

The Industrial Assessment Center at San Jose State University (SJSU IAC) is a new center funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). 

The objective is to train the U.S. workforce of energy professionals and also help improve the energy efficiency and productivity of manufacturing businesses. 

In this position you will receive practical hands-on training on industrial energy systems and will visit local manufacturing businesses to perform energy assessments, giving recommendations for energy saving.

Why Employers Are Hiring Industrial Assessment Center Graduates

Minimum Requirements

  • Major: All engineering majors; 
    • Undergraduate (sophomore or higher)
    • Graduate: first year
  • Good academic standing
  • A minimum commitment of 12 months is required for this position, and 
    • 150-200 hours of work during semester (~10 hours/week on average)
    • Ability to work at least half time during summer (20 hours/week)
  • Travel (mostly after the end of Fall semester)
    • on average 2 day-trips per month 
    • distances up to 200 miles, with potential overnight stay approximately once per month

Preferred Qualifications

  • Major: mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering
  • Have taken a thermodynamics course or equivalent
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills

Responsibilities 

After completing the training program, you will participate in different aspects of the activities of SJSU IAC. The responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Visiting small/medium manufacturing businesses to perform energy and waste assessments with teams of faculty and other engineering students
  • Conducting energy analyses form onsite measurements
  • Perform energy analyses from onsite data collection and utility bills 
  • Writing engineering reports detailing measurements, findings, and recommendations for energy and waste reduction
  • Outreach to companies to recruit clients
  • Project coordination
