New and Current SJSU students

Transition Programming

In 2019, the Spartan East Side Promise began to expand into a program within Student Outreach and Recruitment that focuses on helping incoming East Side Union High School District students transition to San José State University, build connections, and navigate the University.

Our Vision is to collaborate with the campus community on interactive, intentional programming to foster academic, personal, and professional development, and a college going mindset, in ESUHSD students.  To do this, we have three objectives:

1 - Help students become part of larger campus community
2 - Serve as a support system for ESUHSD students and their families
3 - Decrease % of academic probation and disqualification in cohort

SESP Peer Mentors and the Growth Pledge

All ESUHSD students enrolled at SJSU have the opportunity to take the SESP Growth Pledge. The Growth Pledge is designed to be a commitment from both the student and the Spartan East Side Promise Program staff to advocate, engage and work towards the student’s academic success. The steps for the Growth Pledge are as follows:

  1. Schedule a meeting with a Peer Mentor to develop your SMART Goals
  2. Begin to develop your 4-5 year plan using the MyGPS advising tools
  3. Connect with at least two Professors in office hours
  4. Meet with an Academic Advisor in your College Student Success Center
  5. Connect with a Career Center Advisor
  6. Create your resume
  7. Attend at least one SESP event or workshop
  8. Explore campus engagement opportunities
  9. Visit the Writing Center
  10. Share your story thru an SESP medium

This pledge also includes opportunities to meet at minimum once a semester with an SESP Peer Mentor to discuss and develop an action plan to work towards students’ personal, academic, and professional goals. SESP Peer Mentors are also available to meet with students as needed by appointment.

Schedule a Peer Mentor Meeting

As we are not academic advisors, we highly encourage students to meet with an advisor in their College Student Success Center at least once a semester to ensure they are on track to graduate.
