Advising

General Education Advising

For all General Education (GE) advising, please visit the ACCESS Center, located around the corner from our offices, in Clark Hall, room 240. You can also email ACCESS at socsci-success@sjsu.edu for more information and to set up an appointment.

Major/Minor Inquiries

If you are interested in learning more about our major or minor but you are not yet ready to declare, schedule an appointment with Erlinda Yañez, Department Coordinator to help you weigh your options.

Major/Minor Undergraduate Advising

We highly encourage all students to meet with an advisor at least once a semester. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Maria L. Alaniz, Undergraduate Advisor, email her at maria.alaniz @sjsu.edu.  Her office hours this semester are Tuesdays 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Preparing for your advising meeting

To have an effective and informed advising session, we recommend that you have these documents available during your appointment.

  • Four year planner (for first time freshman)
  • Two year planner (for transfers)

Graduate Advising

If you have any questions or need help planning your graduate degree in Chicana and Chicano Studies, please contact Dr. Johnny Ramirez, Graduate Coordinator and Advisor.

Collaboration

Finally, you may benefit from meeting with other faculty who have done research or had experience that interests you. We are proud to be an inclusive and supportive community, where we all work together for the success of all students. We encourage you to meet with any faculty member during their office hours. You may find an expert in our Faculty & Staff Directory.
