Guidance for proposing new courses at San José State University.

Use this page if you are proposing a new course to be added to the Academic Catalog. New courses require department, college, and university-level approval. (Changes to existing courses follow the Course revision process.)

Submit & Track Course Proposals (Curriculog)

All program proposals are submitted and tracked in Modern Campus Curriculum (Curriculog).

How New Course Proposals Are Reviewed

  1. Proposal submitted in Curriculog
  2. Department and college review
  3. University-level review (as applicable)
  4. Catalog publication

Templates & Reference Materials

  • New Courses guidance document. 

  • A course is designated a course components & classification code to describe the mode of instruction, enrollment, and the Weighted Teaching Units (WTU) to be assigned to the instructor responsible for the course. View for more information.
  • To determine which course numbers are appropriate for use as you develop a new course:
    • Utilize the course filter at catalog.sjsu.edu in the "Course Descriptions" section for courses with the desired prefix or subject to confirm the course number is available
    • View Course Numbers for information on numbering standards
  • Strong and assessable Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are connected to course assignments/requirements. 
  • View Syllabus Information for university policies relevant to all courses at SJSU.
