Ecuador: Healthcare in the Middle of the World, Ecuador

Program Description

Ecuador is a small yet culturally diverse country located on the equator and offers a variety of regions in just a small geographical space.

In this FLP program, you will be introduced to their public health system, as well as witness and learn about traditional medicine practices that still exist in parts of the country. We will have a variety of site visits ranging from public and private hospitals, rural health centers, health brigades, and centers of traditional medicine.

We will travel from the high Andean mountain region down to the lower lands, all the way into the Amazon jungle to examine how disability is viewed and how healthcare is administered in the different regions of the country.

Particular focus will be placed on rehab medicine and services (occupational therapy and physical therapy), but we will also explore general medicine practices too. Spanish language skills are not required.

Program Leader: Emily Finn

My name is Emily Finn and I am a graduate of the SJSU OT Masters Program.  I currently live in Quito, Ecuador where I run a private pediatric OT clinic as well as provide consulting services to the local international schools.  I originally came to the Amazon region of Ecuador as an OT volunteer in an outpatient pediatric clinic, and since have established my life and family here.  I am excited to show students what it is like to live and work in a different country, culture, and language, and to share the unique experience of health care and rehab work in Ecuador.
