Course Certification
Although San Jose State is a VA-certified Institution of Higher Learning, courses are deemed certifiable under various conditions such as
- Student's VA benefit eligibility
- Documents uploaded on the student's Veteran Benefits page in Peoplesoft
- Program requirements
Below are program-specific details to consider while using benefits.
| Course Name | VA Certification | Details |
|---|---|---|
|
AVIA 3 Introduction to Private Pilot Part 141 Flight (2 units) |
Not Certifiable |
A Private Pilot certificate allows a pilot to fly solo and carry passengers, but not to fly for compensation. Because it doesn't lead to a vocational objective, VA benefits can't be used for this course. |
|
AVIA 63 Instrument Rating Part 141 Flight (2 units) |
Certifiable beginning AY 2026–27, when flight training is completed at TradeWinds Aviation
|
SJSU Aviation partners with several Part 141 flight schools, but TradeWinds Aviation is currently the only one approved to accept VA benefits for Instrument and Commercial training. To find out whether you're eligible to complete your flight training at TradeWinds, contact Wendy Hales Mora, Assistant Chief Instructor (wendy.hales@sjsu.edu) or Edgar Mora, Chief Instructor (edgar.mora@sjsu.edu)
