How to Apply to the Dance Program
Performance is emphasized in the Dance Program at San José State University, and dance majors are eligible to perform in their freshman year. The program presents at least three separate, fully-produced student concerts annually, providing ample performance opportunities. Two student companies also offer a more advanced scale of work by professional choreographers. Majors are eligible to audition for these companies at the end of their freshman year.
In addition, the program sponsors nine informal showings of studies each year from Choreography classes, in which all students participate. In their senior year, all majors are required to perform in the Portfolio Concert to be evaluated in performance and/or choreography. Performances take place in the Dance Theatre, which is fully equipped with lighting, sound, theatrical draperies, and a Marley floor.
