Mathematics at SJSU

Students planing to attend SJSU can view which math course is the most appropriate choice for their major and enrollment category by using the Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning Course Options Explorer. The CSU system has also released a new student success website with additional resources for understanding multiple measures, including a math and English placement estimator.

• Do I need to take the Calculus Placement Exam?

  • Only students seeking to take a Calculus course in their first semester at SJSU are required to complete the Calculus Placement Exam to substitute for prerequisite coursework. A diagnostic CPE exam is available for practice. To learn more about the CPE, contact the SJSU Testing Office at testing-office@sjsu.edu.

• What is the general mathematics course sequence recommended for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) majors?

  • Math 1 (Math Reasoning) to Math 19 (Pre-Calculus) to Math 30 (Calculus)

  • Math 1 (Math Reasoning) to Math 18 (College Algebra - formerly known as Math 8) to Math 71 (Calculus for Aviation and Business)
