Community Health Equity

Community Health Equity is a collaborative initiative with SJSU Human Rights Institute (HRI) that centers the voices and lived experiences of community members to guide strategies for health and wellness.
Through active preventive programs, community education, and engaging activities for youth, families, and caregivers, we work to support physical, relational, and mental wellness across the lifespan.
Grounded in culturally sustaining practices, primary prevention, and an understanding of the social determinants of health, our programs emphasize the healthy development of children and youth, the well-being of families, and the collective strength of the community.
For Youth
- Neighbors in Nature, community-building program. We provide after-school activities and games for youth
and families at a local outdoor space.
- Tuesdays (March 10th-May 5th, excluding March 31st)
- 5-7pm @ Payne Avenue Friendship Park
- Cocinando Juntos, interactive family nutrition workshops
- Tuesdays (March 19, April 16, May 7) @5:30pm

- Sobremesa, hands-on cooking activities that celebrate traditional dishes across cultures while
building healthy, shame-free relationships with food. By combining cultural food knowledge
with nutrition science, the program fosters pride, strengthens food literacy, and
supports lifelong wellness.
- Fit & Fun, physical activity program. We bring sports and games to a local space to encourage
movement!
- Unwind with Art, wellness program. We bring arts-based activities to classrooms to support student mental health.
Some of our youth programs are currently only offered through our active partnerships with schools and community organizations. If your organization is interested in partnering with us, send us an email at healthydev@sjsu.edu!
