Orissa Smith-Goshen - Greetings Friends!
My name, pronounced Oh-rissa, originated from a state in India. California has been my home since birth. Our family always had a pool or access to the ocean which fostered my love of the water. Swimming is such a wonderful tool for relaxation, but also exercise and play. I became a swim instructor at Timpany in 2019 after my first open water triathlon.
The approach I take to swim lessons includes theory borrowed from the Halliwick Concept. By focusing on water safety, orientation, and breathing from the beginning, I believe individuals establish firmer trust in the aquatic environment, allowing more comfortable exploration. Clients I serve have a range of abilities and ages, inspiring me to be well versed in swim strokes, as well as human development. I believe swimming is one exercise that can literally save your life and I am eager to help others learn and thrive in the water.
San Jose State is my alma mater from undergrad work, where I earned my BA in Theatre Arts. I have recently returned as a graduate student to pursue a career in occupational therapy. I am so excited to have found a career path that fits me perfectly, as I hope to bring my services to our clientele here at Timpany in the future. I look forward to networking and collaborating with my community to enrich all of our lives. Cheers! Dennis Young - Swim Instructor / Lifeguard
San Francisco born and raised, A bit different than most of the staff at TC, since I have an Industrial Engr degree from UC Berkeley and I'm one of the oldest, yet newest swim instructors at TC. You'll know me by the grey hairs and you'll know that I am one of the "senior" staff. I started out at TC as a volunteer ( I manage TC's website as well as TC's other IT needs) after being a member for more than 8 years before asking to contribute more as a staff member.
TC has taught me that the job of a swim instructor requires a passion and dedication to service and its rewards are not always tangible. The smiles and achievements of my students however are more valuable than the tangible. It takes patience (and sometimes a smile), communication, and much attention to work with our students , especially the ones with special needs in our adapted lesson. Adapted lessons are a new one for me, but I am learning much from the more experienced instructors. Since our students have unique needs it's alway a grand adventure with sometimes an unplanned journey.
If a lesson is canceled by Timpany Center (instructor illness, facility closure, etc.), a credit or make up lesson will be offered.
If a student misses a class due to medical reasons, a credit will be issued or a make up lesson will be scheduled after receipt of proper documentation. Only one credit per session.
If a student misses a class due to vacation or other scheduling conflict, credits or refunds are not offered.
Class Refund Policy
All refund requests must be submitted in writing to the Timpany Center. Full refunds (minus a $25.00 processing fee) will be issued if the request is postmarked at least 7 business days in advance. If payment was received via check, there is a 2 week waiting period before the original check is processed and mailed. Credit card refunds will be credited back to the original card account within 3 weeks of processing refund request. Requests after the 7 day period must be submitted and will be handled on an individual basis.
Returned Checks & Declined Credit Cards
If a check is returned, or a credit card is declined, Timpany Center management will contact the individual on the account and notify them about the transaction. There will be a $25 processing fee for ALL returned checks and declined credit cards additional to the already due amount. If a credit card is declined, or a check returned two consecutive sessions the Timpany Center management will ask that the session be paid with cash only.
Open or “Free” Swim Before/ After Class
Please note that swim lesson participants are not permitted to enter/remain in the water before or after their swim lesson. A child may visit the pool during OPEN SWIM hours but must follow all age requirement rules and pay proper entry fees. These fees are not included within the swim lesson registration cost. Inquire at the front desk about obtaining a drop-in pass, monthly pass, or monthly family membership if you or your child is interested in swimming during OPEN SWIM times. We offer discounts on drop-ins for swim lesson students.
Proper Swim Gear
All Children under the age of 4 or children/adults who have known (or the possibility
of) fecal incontinence, must use an approved swim diaper/retainer before entering the pool.
Approved diapers/retainers for most ages can be purchased at the Timpany Center. If you wish to purchase this item outside of the Timpany Center, please confirm with staff that you are purchasing an approved style. Instructors and/or deck coordinators will confirm with parents/guardians/attendants, of participants who fall in the above categories, that the proper swim diaper is being used. Goggles are not required; however, they are strongly recommended. Girls with hair medium or long hair must wear their hair pulled back.
Designated Parent Seating Area
To insure the quality of your child’s class, we ask parents/guardians to please remain in a designated area during all classes. Approved areas include: the parent area near the patio doors on the pool deck, the blue benches placed around the pool deck, or the tables placed in the pool/front lobby area. Please avoid interrupting the class while it is in session. If you have any questions, please wait until the end of class to approach the instructor. Violation of this policy may result in two warnings, and dismissal from the pool area. Parents must remain on site during the entire lesson.
Designated Student Waiting Area
Students are NOT allowed in the water without their instructor at anytime. Instructors will meet their students at the top of the steps of the pool area. Please be sure that students are on time and remain with your child until the instructor arrives to greet the children in their class.
