Mission and History

Our Center is the primary office that supports curricular service learning and community engagement experiences at SJSU. We provide resources and support to faculty, students, and community organizations who engage in intentional educational opportunities that contribute to the public good.

Service learning and community engagement are instructional strategies that promote student learning through active participation in meaningful service in the community directly related to course objectives. Through reflective activities, students enhance understanding of course content, self-awareness, civic responsibility and commitment to the community. This community-based, experiential learning pedagogy is a High Impact Educational Practice.

History

The Center for Community Learning and Leadership, formerly known as the Center for Service Learning, was established in January 2000 as part of the Office of Undergraduate Studies. Responding to a call in higher education from university presidents, government, and the California State University, San Jose Staté University institutionalized community learning within the academic program.
