A

Academic Renewal(pdf)
formerly known as 'Disregard Previous Semester's Work prior to Fall 2009'
Conditions: If you are a graduating senior with a grade point average (GPA) below a 2.0 in your major, minor, SJSU, or overall college coursework, you may request that all grades earned in a previous semester be disregarded, so that you may graduate. Read instructions on form carefully to see if you qualify. 

 

American Institutions - (DocuSign electronic version) or (Hardcopy pdf version)
Conditions: Completion or partial completion of American Institutions (US1: US History, US2: American Constitution, and/or US3: California Government) requirements at other colleges or universities.

 

Appeal a PD 2009-05 Decision(pdf)(link to AARS Form)
This petition is solely to appeal decisions made under the Implementation Guidelines for the Presidential Directive 2009-05 (see web-page  for more information http://www.sjsu.edu/president/docs/PD_2009-05.pdf). 

Student must submit completed petition to the Administration building, room 159

Back-date of Degree(pdf) 
Conditions: All undergraduate degree requirements completed, but administrative errors or extenuating circumstances prevented degree from being awarded. Student must have been formally admitted and enrolled at SJSU for at least one semester.  Petition request should not be used for situations in which a student is unaware that there were outstanding requirements.

CORE GE Equivalent Course(pdf)
Conditions: Courses in any CORE Area completed OUTSIDE the California Community College (CCC) or CSU System, or for CCC or CSU courses articulated to more than one GE Area.

Enroll in SJSU Studies (Area R, S, & V) or 100W (Area Z) Course(s) with Fewer than 60 Units Completed (Google Form)
Conditions: This petition is ONLY necessary for Lower Division (LD) students who completed their CORE GE and have passed the Writing Skills Test (WST), seeking to enroll in SJSU Studies (Area R, S, & V) and/or Written Communication II (Area Z 100W) requiring Upper Division(UD) standing as a prerequisite. Students with UD standing with transfer credit not posted on MySJSU, or Open University/Special Session students seeking to enroll in SJSU Studies may use this petition. 

Even if a petition is approved advanced registration will NOT be possible, student will be able to registrar after the first day of class for the semester seeking enrollment.

NOTE:due to the closer of testing sites - completion of the WST is being waived for students seeking to enroll in SJSU Studies for Summer 2020 and Fall 2020.

Intensive Science Plan (CORE Area B)(pdf)
Conditions: For undergraduate students, who have successfully completed in-depth coursework in science that is not articulated/certified for GE, may request an alternative package to satisfy those portions of CORE Physical Science (B1), Life Science (B2), Laboratory Science (B3), and/or Mathematical Concepts (B4) that have not already been met by approved GE courses.

 

Intensive Music Plan (CORE Area C)(pdf)
Conditions: Undergraduate students, who have successfully completed in-depth coursework in music that is not certified for GE, may request an alternative package to satisfy area C.

Non-Matriculated, Open University, J-1 Visa Students Taking SJSU Studies(Area R, S, & V) and/or Written Communication II(Area Z 100W) Courses for Non-GE Credit(pdf)
Conditions: Only for undergraduate, Open University, and J-1 Visas students who are not matriculated at SJSU and do not plan to matriculate (formally apply for admissions and enroll) at SJSU trying to enroll in SJSU Studies and/or 100W Course. 

If approved students will not received Upper Division GE credit for these courses.

Open University Coursework to Satisfy Graduation Requirements(docusign)
(formerly known as 'Excess Open University (OU) Units' petition) 
Conditions: Students who have applied for graduation and need Open University units to meet the 120 unit minimum for baccalaureate degree, the 40 unit minimum for upper division, and/or the residence requirement for upper divisioGE units in order to graduate; AND demonstrate that the excess units were accumulated as a result of being disqualified from SJSU and becoming eligible for reinstatement, OR there were extenuating circumstances beyond your control may file this petition. Consult with your graduation evaluator. 

 

Opt-out of Grade Forgiveness(docusign) 
Conditions: Use this petition if you do not wish to use grade forgiveness on second & first attempt. There are a limited number of Grade Forgiveness units available to students according to University Policy F08-2. Grade forgiveness is awarded automatically when a student is eligible. Grade Forgiveness will always improve students GPA so long as the second attempt at a particular course earns a higher grade than the first attempt. There are very few conceivable situations in which a student would not wish to take advantage of Grade Forgiveness. Form should be submitted by the course add deadline for full consideration.

Petition for Additional Baccalaureate Credit for International OR Equivalent College Credit (pdf)(Admissions form)
Conditions: This petition is used to request unit credit for course work taken at an accredited college/university abroad or in the US, not granted (rejected) upon admission.

Submit completed petition to the Admissions Office.

 

Physical Education Requirement(docusign)
Conditions: Only for undergraduate student who have extenuating circumstances that interfere with the completion of 2 unit/activities of physical education requirement. This petition can be used to waiver or substitute one or both units. There is also a procedure where by a student can challenge one or more units of the requirement by demonstrating a variety of competencies.

NOTE: Online PE options are now available at SJSU and many community colleges. PE Waiver requests based on the need to avoid in-person classes will be denied. R

Re-Admission Petition as a Former Student Returning (FSR) to SJSU for Undergraduates(link to Registrar form)
Conditions: This petition applies to former SJSU students who were previously enrolled, wishing to re-matriculate at SJSU. Students who have only enrolled in Open University are not eligible. Completion of this petition MAY result in a higher admission priority to a desired major degree program.

 

Reinstatement: returning from Disqualification status(link to Registrar Form)
Condition: 
Must be in disqualified status at SJSU to submit this petition. This is the process that allows a student become eligible for Readmission at SJSU and restoring matriculation status. This process is different from 
Re-Admission. Students who "Stop-Out" DO NOT need to submit a Reinstatement Petition. 

 

Retroactive Grade Forgiveness(docusign) 
formerly known as 'Academic Renewal'
At SJSU, Grade Forgiveness(GF) is the circumstance in which the new grade replaces the former grade with respect to the calculation of GPA (University Policy F08-2). The original grade remains on the transcript. This petition is only for undergraduate students and for coursework taken at only at SJSU not designated "repeatable for credit", in which GF was not automatically assign.

 

Retroactively Withdrawal from ALL Semester Courses(link to AARS form)  
Conditions: Undergraduate students only with extenuating circumstances that prevented them from dropping all courses during the semester. Use this petition to retroactively drop ALL courses for a past semester (University Policy S09-7). Please use a separate petition for each semester you wish to drop. If you wish to drop one class only, use the Retroactive Course Drop Petition form.  
 

Return to Earlier GE Pattern(pdf) - 
Conditions: Completion of all GE requirements prior to leaving SJSU, or extenuating circumstances beyond student's control that caused break in continuous enrollment.


S

SJSU Studies Equivalent Course(pdf) - 
Conditions: Guidelines for petitioning non-SJSU upper division GE courses taken at another university (CSU) to have them approved for SJSU Studies (Area R,S, & V).  Recommend students take and pass WST (or ENGL/LLD 100A course) before submitting this petition. Consult with an advisor.

 

Substitution of Graduation Requirements Based on Disability(pdf) -
formerly known as Modification of Requirements Based on Disability
Conditions:  This petition is only for undergraduate students who are registered with the Accessible Education Center (AEC),and who have been formally admitted to and enrolled at SJSU for at least one semester.  Have a disability that impacts your ability to complete traditional requirements, you may file this petition for a substitution for GE or other graduation requirements. However, no requirements are waived.

Consult with the Accessible Education Center in Administration 110. 


W

Written Communication II (100W) Requirement (pdf) - 
Conditions:  Completion of upper division composition course or demonstration of exceptional writing ability (e.g., published expository writing), you may request prior satisfaction of the Written Communication II requirement. If you have completed the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) at another CSU, this GE requirement is automatically fulfilled; however your major department may require you to take a particular 100W class as part of the degree requirements in that major regardless of previous experience. Coursework already given credit in GE Area A2 (English 1A) or second semester composition (English 1B) may not be used as a basis for this petition.
