Attending SJSU has been an empowering experience, and a smooth segue as a first-generation transfer student. I’ve gained a strong sense of belonging to the College of Social Sciences which is staffed with dedicated and motivating advisors, professors, and administrative personnel who have been supportive throughout my higher education. Being part of the Sociology major has given me the opportunity to develop a sense of community surrounding students interested in related majors and subjects. The department has openly encouraged creating a student server that provides an environment for peer connection and resourcing. Students gain fellowship and knowledge about societal topics that are beneficial post-graduation.

“My time and education from SJSU is something I will always appreciate. School was difficult for me until I found sociology. I never knew there was an entire field that was based on things I would frequently think about. I went from struggling in school to graduating with honors. I couldn’t have been luckier to learn from the amazing professors. They made me think, sincerely engaged with me and my education, and even brought the lessons outside of the classroom. I learned so much on so many different topics and now I am able to apply my education in everyday life. The world is never black and white. The sociology professors at SJSU will open your eyes to numerous shades of gray and leave you wanting to find more.”

"The time I spent studying at SJSU has been invaluable. I benefit from my education
in sociology everyday. In a career where I meet people from all walks of life, I always
feel a sense of empathy because of my understanding of society. The sociology professors
at SJSU opened my eyes to our society that functions on an infinite spectrum. My professors
were always supportive and encouraged students to think on their own. You will gain
a better understanding of the people in this world which will benefit numerous aspects
of your life."

As a graduate of SJSU's Sociology department, I can confidently say that sociology
has impacted the way I navigate both my personal and professional life in positive
and educational ways. It has helped me navigate new environments, new groups and new
structures that at first seem strange or unknown yet aid in sustaining an existing
society or function. In a professional setting, it helps me be a better communicator,
collaborator within my team/department, and allows me to push positive changes and
contribute to an already existing culture/environment. When there are roadblocks or
issues, I take from my sociology studies on how I can, both as an individual contributor
and part of a group, push forward ideas and create positive impact. On a personal
level, I'm constantly saying "thanks to my studies in sociology..." whenever analyzing
and trying to understand human behaviors and how said individuals either positively
or negatively impact a setting or group. My goal is always to find out the who, what,
when, where, why, and how we can ensure all individuals are on the same page and moving
forward productively and of course happily.
