SJMA Walking Tour

San José Museum of Art welcomes its members to a members-only walking tour. Select the full 3-hour tour at 9am or the abbreviated tour at 4pm.

After you have created or renewed your SJMA membership, we welcome you to register for one of the Public Art Walking tours.

  • Registration for members available here: 9am Tour or 4pm Tour. 

• What artwork are we going to see?

  • The full tour will walk by and hear about 12 works of public art. The Southside tour will see 9 works of art. (See the maps above.) To read about each public artwork, check out the mini-essays created collaboratively by team members.

• Where and when do we meet on June 5?

  • Meet at the Arch of Dignity (Cesar Chavez Memorial), San José State University. Download [pdf] the campus map and meet at the area circled about 20mins prior to your tour. We will check in everyone based on their registration.

• What am I missing on the 4pm tour?

  • The 4pm tour goes through the Southside route, which includes the "Sophie Holding the World Together" mural near the Children's Discovery Museum. The Northside tour has an added 3 public artworks. You are welcome to use the Linktree or the GPSmyCity mobile app to view the Northside at another time. See our self-guided tour options.

• What if I get tired?

  • You are welcome to join us for all or part of either tour. We will walk by some local restaurants (especially in the SOFA District) that might pique your interest for a quick bite or lunch. You can always finish the tour on your own using our Linktree and/or the GPSmyCity mobile app.

• Do you know the way to San Jose (State University)?

  • Check out the directions to main campus.

• Where can I park for this tour?

  • SJSU garages (using ParkMobile app) are open to anyone (see our Parking Solutions) for a nominal amount ($8 for a full day) or use street parking  around campus (free on Sundays).

• Can I get to SJSU without driving? 

  • Yes, see our Transportation Solutions for commuting information.

• What is the cost of the tour?

  • FREE! The tour was originally supported by a California Humanities-Humanities for All Quick Grant. Read more about that here. SJMA is sponsoring these two tours for their members.

• What is the max number of people per tour?

  • 20 attendees at each tour group.

• How long will the tour take to complete? 

  • Depending upon your selected tour, 2-3 hours

• What is the distance of the tour?

  • Depending upon your selected tour, 2.6-3.2 miles around downtown San José. 

• What do I wear?

  • We will be mostly walking on sidewalks through downtown, which is heavily shaded. Wear comfortable walking shoes. 

• Are there water fountains & bathrooms along the route?

  • Since SJSU is a sustainble campus, we strive to reduce waste every chance we can get; for this reason, please bring a water container for refilling at water fountains (one should be working along our route). There are 2 public bathrooms along the route. 

• Can I bring a friend?

  • Everyone should be registered under their own names at the link above so we can maintain our limit of 20 attendees. If bringing a child who cannot register for themselves, please indicate this in your registration. 

• I can't make it on June 5th - is there a self-guided option?

  • Yes! Though you'll miss the wealth of information provided by our knowledgable tour guides, the self-guided tour is the next best thing. Use the GPSmyCity free mobile app or pdf map and use the Linktree for information about each artwork. See more about how to take this tour on your own time.
