New to online classes? Looking for more support for online learning in Fall 2020?
SJSU is offering a new 1-unit course to help students master the basics:
COMM 80A: Succeeding in Online Classes.
This Credit/No-credit class will introduce you to a variety of successful strategies, tools, and technologies common to SJSU’s online environment. You will have the chance to practice using different features of Canvas, Zoom, Google Suite and more. You will learn about campus resources and important skills like time management and strategies to maintain well-being. And you will do this over a full semester with guidance from an expert instructor and a group of supportive classmates.
This course is highly recommended for students who experienced challenges with the transition to online learning in Spring 2020 and are seeking to improve their academic success this fall.
We know that taking classes online is not every student’s first choice, but we are here to help you develop the skills and mindset you need to succeed and keep up your progress toward graduation.

Online Learning Environments
How can you tell which type of online class you are taking?
- Synchronous classes will have a regular meeting time listed.
- Asynchronous classes will have TBA listed under Days & Times.
Be sure to check the syllabus for additional course-specific information.
-
Synchronous Learning
-
A learning methodology where students are engaging in learning at the same time that it is taught. For instance, face-to-face video conferencing where students can directly communicate with their teacher.
-
-
Asynchronous Learning
-
An online learning environment where students' learning does not occur at the same time that it is delivered. This approach combines self-study with asynchronous interactions to promote learning.
Online learning resources that can be used to support asynchronous learning include Canvas, online discussion boards, wikis and blogs.
-
-
Hybrid Learning
-
Hybrid instruction takes place both in person and online. This mode is scheduled even if one campus meeting is required.
For example, a hybrid course might meet twice a week with one day on campus and the other day online.
