Meet the Classic Tutors

Izzy AsuncionName: Izzy Asuncion - Video Introduction
Major: Business Administration
Role: Classic Tutor

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… that I should not be ashamed of the fact that stress can definitely get overwhelming. At one point, I was afraid to get help and afraid to open up about the fact that stress has gotten to me. I was afraid of being a bother to people if I talk to them about how I have been truly feeling. However, the more I slowly opened up to others, especially my friends and loved ones, the more i realized that it is inevitable. No matter what age or stage of life we are all in, we can get stressed, but we should not be afraid to talk about it or seek for help when we need it. Talking it out and seeking for help can actually be a way to reduce your stress and take out some of the pressure you may be feeling.
  • My best strategy for college success is… plan ahead for all assignments, tests and projects.

Vivian DoanName: Vivian Doan - Video Introduction
Major: Nursing
Role: Classic Tutor

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… about the many different resources created by students online as well as the general resources provided by the school that are created to help students adjust to life at SJSU. For example, on Facebook there is a housing group where students can post listings of available off-campus living spaces for those who are looking for housing. From the school, Transportation Solutions provides discounted ACE train tickets that allowed me to visit home at a discounted price.
  • My best strategy for college success is… step out of your comfort zone and try and experience new things! There is a lot that I would have never discovered that I enjoyed if I never out myself out there. I discovered new hobbies and met a lot of amazing friends by joining different clubs, utilizing campus recreation, and working jobs on campus.

Carlos GonzalezName: Carlos Gonzalez

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… about the different services that Peer Connections has to offer. When I first attended SJSU I was aware of the SI Leaders because of my Chem 1A class, but I didn't realize the other roles in Peer Connections. After my first semester I began to learn about the tutoring, workshops, and other services that Peer Connections has to offer. I realized that Peer Connections helps students with many aspects, not just academic.
  • My best strategy for college success is… getting to know your fellow colleagues is vital. Forming study groups has been the best way I can study for a class. I personally feel that studying via teaching your fellow student is the best way to solidify the information in your mind. Another bonus is that you can oftentimes make a great friendship which can transcend your time at SJSU.

Jonathan TshimpakaName: Jonathan Tshimpaka - Video Introduction
Major: Computer Science
Role: Classic Tutor

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… how to be balanced. During my first semester, I set myself a goal to get an internship offer before Christmas break. I worked really hard to accomplish this goal and I completely neglected my school work. My grades suffered as a result, and I did not succeed in getting an internship offer. I am happy that this first semester helped me remember to be balanced when I work toward a goal and avoid neglecting other responsibilities that I may have. Also, it is okay to fail, just learn from it and try to get better.
  • My best strategy for college success is… careful planning is very important in my opinion. Setting myself short and long terms goals helps me to stay focus on my priority and I certainly believe everyone should set themselves goals. "To get where you are going, you need to know where you are going first", without goals, you don't know where you are going. There is so much going on in college that one can get lost, settings goals and working hard to achieve it every day has helped me personally to stay on top of my work and be successful. It's something I need to improve because I have not been consistent with it. Every time I keep this strategy consistent, I am always on top of my work.

Clubs related to your major and finding activities you are interested in will allow you to grow social connections and may spark a new passion. Creating a schedule is one of the most valuable methods of organization to hold myself accountable and stay organized for my future tasks.

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… that big gaps between classes are very useful because I am able to do work in the library or get food.
  • My best strategy for college success is… to be successful in college, you need to put in work. You have to be independent and actively look for opportunities. You are now an adult and you need to take charge of your life.

Hannah BittarName: Hannah Bittar - Video Introduction

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… about all the resources and different research opportunities available!
  • My best strategy for college success is… have fun and enjoy the journey, network and meet people, form study groups, and do extracurriculars that you are interested in.

Name: Matthew Chan
Major: Software Engineering
Role: SI Leader

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… how to network with my fellow students either through events or just in general. Although I am fairly confident in conversing with others, I am not confident in discovering networking events to either make friends or just to broaden my network. Especially with transitioning to online learning, I had trouble with staying connected with my fellow engineering friends and reaching out to engineering clubs to start projects with. As such, when I started at SJSU, I wish I had known how to develop a plan to network with other students in clubs and organizations to ensure that I have the ability to work with others.
  • My best strategy for college success is… to make a schedule or plan for your classes. A good tool for this would be MyScheduler provided by the MySJSU portal as it already has the time slots for your classes, so all you need is to input the time slots for assignments, activities, and etc. Freshmen year may not be the most intense year, so there might not be a need to actually have a strict schedule. However, it is still good to eventually develop this habit of planning out your day as upper-division classes eat up more and more of your time, which may be coupled with club responsibilities and internship applications.

Neel ChitaleName: Neel Chitale - Video Introduction
Major: Molecular Biology
Role: SI Leader

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… about the MLK Library's Online Database. The system is so user friendly and helpful for all SJSU students because it makes finding peer reviewed texts very easy. I certainly would have been saved a lot of work and time on my first few college papers if I had known about this resource from the get go, but at least now you can!
  • My best strategy for college success is… setting aside time for recreation and socialization. Of course it's important to focus on your studies, but if you aren't participating in activities that'll offset the stress of academics like hanging out with friends you won't last long. That goes the other way too if you like to spend too much time having fun and you need to set aside time to study. The big takeaway is that college is all about striking the balance between your school life and personal life, and the sooner you find out what works for you the sooner things will begin to feel comfortable!

Also, if you're interested in a program/club/internship, just give it a go! You never know what will happen.
  • My best strategy for college success is… meet people! So many professors have supported me and my journey and made themselves available to just talk things through. Peers that I've met in classes and clubs have introduced me to cool opportunities, and I was able to avoid so many close calls with graduation planning because I bugged all my advisors endlessly.

Name: Amanda Morris
Major: Psychology
Role: SI Leader

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… about the "Coffee with a Professor" program that Spartans can utilize twice per semester to meet with their instructors outside of scheduled class time for coffee, the costs being covered by SJSU. This presents an easier opportunity for students to construct more meaningful relationships with their professors outside of academia.
  • My best strategy for college success is… time management. Procrastinating gets work done on occasion, but we fail to remember that we are gradually working towards applying our lessons learned to our eventual practice. Not only is this not beneficial to you, but it prevents your clientele from getting access to the professional help they require due to your lack of knowledge. From personal experience, the introduction of making lists and using a calendar vastly changed my productivity as it visually held me accountable for the tasks I needed to complete. Waking up and looking at my whiteboard occupied with unchecked boxes forced me to take charge over the responsibilities I needed to tend to and I still implement this system daily.

Having things planned out with alternatives in case anything comes up has saved me a lot of frustration. Also, make sure you have a record of your plans. Prepare for test/exams in advance and always read the lesson ahead of class as it helps you understand better.
