At one point, I was afraid to get help and afraid to open up about the fact that stress has gotten to me. I was afraid of being a bother to people if I talk to them about how I have been truly feeling. However, the more I slowly opened up to others, especially my friends and loved ones, the more i realized that it is inevitable. No matter what age or stage of life we are all in, we can get stressed, but we should not be afraid to talk about it or seek for help when we need it. Talking it out and seeking for help can actually be a way to reduce your stress and take out some of the pressure you may be feeling.

Top priorities should be to strategize on how to finish assignments on time and how to effectively study for exams. Something I would recommend is as soon as you get the syllabus, to sit down and put down the important due dates in your calendar. Whether it's keeping track of when I have classes or if I have any club or work meetings, Google Calendar is my go-to app. Plus the ability to use so many different colors makes it so much easier to categorize different groups. I also like to use a platform called "Notion" to keep track of my assignments since I have to manually enter any assignments from Canvas which helps make me aware of what I have to do in the near future.

Miah Wiltshire

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… how quickly the first year goes by. I think a big part of it is due to the fact that we’re all so used to taking the same 5 or so classes the entire school year (August-May). But now, in college, it seems like just when we get settled in our classes, it’s time to move on to the next ones!
  • My best strategy for college success is… taking a mental health day. At first I thought it would be a sign of weakness for me, but now I see it is just the opposite. • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… to use MyScheduler to schedule classes, avoid taking gaps between classes that are more than two hours long, and to fully know what my passions were so I could've switched majors earlier. Always bring your charger. Talk to your advisor at least two times a semester even if you think everything is going fine (they always catch something!). Try to get dropped off at school/go at least one hour early during the first week because parking is crazy. Try not to buy brand new textbooks.
  • My best strategy for college success is… never cram! It saves a lot of stress in the long run to study maybe 3 days before and review the day before an exam. Know how you like to learn (ex. visually? use diagrams). Talk to your advisor at least two times a semester to make sure you're on track and not missing anything. Ask the professor if lecture slides are posted/recorded or if you can audio record.

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… about the MLK Library's Online Database. The system is so user friendly and helpful for all SJSU students because it makes finding peer reviewed texts very easy. I certainly would have been saved a lot of work and time on my first few college papers if I had known about this resource from the get go, but at least now you can!
  • My best strategy for college success is… setting aside time for recreation and socialization. Of course it's important to focus on your studies, but if you aren't participating in activities that'll offset the stress of academics like hanging out with friends you won't last long. That goes the other way too if you like to spend too much time having fun and you need to set aside time to study. The big takeaway is that college is all about striking the balance between your school life and personal life, and the sooner you find out what works for you the sooner things will begin to feel comfortable!

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… many things. I am a first-generation college student and the first to ever go to college in my family. So when I came to SJSU, I was scared to speak up when I needed help. SJSU provides many learning services and aids, like student tutoring and SI Sessions for extra studying and help. Learn to take advantage of these resources, especially when you're struggling. If you're struggling, know that many students out there are too. It's okay to ask the professor questions or to tell the professor that you are struggling in order to get the help that you need.
  • My best strategy for college success is… studying in a timely manner. I also recommend studying in groups because although you may not know something, there is a good chance that one of your peers does and can explain it in a way in a student may better understand. I usually type my notes in class, rewrite them when I get home, and once again when I'm studying. I study at least 3 days in advance. Taking breaks in between my studying also allows for better absorption of information.

  • When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… about the "Coffee with a Professor" program that Spartans can utilize twice per semester to meet with their instructors outside of scheduled class time for coffee, the costs being covered by SJSU. This presents an easier opportunity for students to construct more meaningful relationships with their professors outside of academia.
  • My best strategy for college success is… time management. Procrastinating gets work done on occasion, but we fail to remember that we are gradually working towards applying our lessons learned to our eventual practice. Not only is this not beneficial to you, but it prevents your clientele from getting access to the professional help they require due to your lack of knowledge. From personal experience, the introduction of making lists and using a calendar vastly changed my productivity as it visually held me accountable for the tasks I needed to complete. Waking up and looking at my whiteboard occupied with unchecked boxes forced me to take charge over the responsibilities I needed to tend to and I still implement this system daily.

  • My best strategy for college success is… prioritizing tasks has been really helpful for me because often times there's a lot on my to-do list, but prioritizing more important tasks can be less overwhelming. Breaking down big assignments, like a report, into smaller tasks is also helpful, so you can avoid cramming on the last day.

  • My best strategy for college success is… consistency and connections. Being consistent in college is key to success, if you start getting backlog in subjects, its usually pretty hard to cope up with the coursework. Also making good connections in class and out of class is essential for growth as you can meet a lot of people that can help you with the problems you are facing.
