In my second year, coming to campus, I was able to experience signing up for clubs and attending socials, and ended up having a great time.

- When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… that the Highway 17 bus from Santa Cruz does not go to campus. You have to transfer at the Diridon Station to a VTA bus, and then walk a couple blocks to campus.

- When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… how competitive my major (pre-nursing) would be. I was surprised to find out that almost everyone was working really hard for their 4.0. When I would be studying for midterms or finals, I first found myself comparing how much time I spent studying to those around me. If you find yourself in the same situation as me where you are constantly comparing yourself, my tip for you is to remember that everyone learns at different speeds and ways, and it's important to remember that what works for you can be different than what works for the people around you.
- My best strategy for college success is… have fun! It's very easy for you to burn yourself out if you don't enjoy your time. Having genuine curiosity and interest in what you learn about will help you succeed in your studies. Aside for your studies, make sure you take time to do things you love like your hobbies or going out with your friends. Enjoy your time at SJSU!

We get 8 free therapy sessions through CAPS, the ability to rent electronics and miscellaneous school supplies through the SJSU library, a free Adobe membership, free on campus gym membership and more! Finding these benefits and utilizing them is the best way to make the most of your time at SJSU.
- My best strategy for college success is… the amount of coursework can be jarring at first, but with time you can overcome the learning curve by figuring out how the class runs. Top priorities should be to strategize on how to finish assignments on time and how to effectively study for exams. Something I would recommend is as soon as you get the syllabus, to sit down and put down the important due dates in your calendar. It really just takes strong organization skills to excel in a class!

- When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… that a lot of the people you'll meet here are super nice and friendly. I was able to meet a lot of my friends by getting involved in clubs and it's made my daily school life so much more fun! I really recommend that everyone try to get involved whether it's through clubs, socials, or greek life because you're going to meet so many awesome people.
- My best strategy for college success is… getting organized. I personally love using Google Calendar since I'm able to keep track of all my responsibilities on one platform! Whether it's keeping track of when I have classes or if I have any club or work meetings, Google Calendar is my go-to app. Plus the ability to use so many different colors makes it so much easier to categorize different groups. I also like to use a platform called "Notion" to keep track of my assignments since I have to manually enter any assignments from Canvas which helps make me aware of what I have to do in the near future.

- When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… about all of the resources available to students at SJSU. There are so many different ways the school supports us, from Peer Connections to CAPS. College can be a struggle sometimes and knowing where to get help can make all the difference.

It's ok to not fully understand what we learn in class, especially when there is alot of material covered. So its really import to reach out to the professor, tutor, learning assistant or even a classmate to help understand the material.

- When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… about the rigor of the project-based learning approach. While I think it is a wonderful way to ensure students understand the material, it was definitely a bit jarring as I was not at all prepared for such an environment.
- My best strategy for college success is… keep on top of your work. Keep a calendar, a to-do list, and know all your due dates. Do not cram your work all into one day when it's assigned, and don't cram it all before the due date. Spread it all out over time. This way you can finish these assignments with more focus and more purposefully, so as to truly practice and understand the material. Don't forget to take breaks as well, you can't ever hope to work at full capacity if you burn out and never recover.

While it's always great to put yourself out there and try to push the boundaries of what you can and can't do, it's super important to pace yourself accordingly and understand that it's okay to not go at 100% all the time. Don't be afraid to take an easy courseload if you think that you can't handle a harder one. Your grades are decided the moment you set your schedule.
- My best strategy for college success is… to plan ahead so that I can be lazy later. For my academic coursework, I enjoy being ahead of schedule (through watching videos or looking through the textbook) since it gives me some breathing room in this hectic college life. I get an opportunity to slack off without even feeling bad about it.

- When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… to use MyScheduler to schedule classes, avoid taking gaps between classes that are more than two hours long, and to fully know what my passions were so I could've switched majors earlier. Always bring your charger. Talk to your advisor at least two times a semester even if you think everything is going fine (they always catch something!). Try to get dropped off at school/go at least one hour early during the first week because parking is crazy. Try not to buy brand new textbooks.
- My best strategy for college success is… never cram! It saves a lot of stress in the long run to study maybe 3 days before and review the day before an exam. Know how you like to learn (ex. visually? use diagrams). Talk to your advisor at least two times a semester to make sure you're on track and not missing anything. Ask the professor if lecture slides are posted/recorded or if you can audio record.

- When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… to use the Sammy App more often to explore different clubs and learn about the various events on campus, as well as to explore the library more for their interesting exhibits and useful resources. I also wish I knew earlier that there are so many resources in the Student Wellness Center. Students can receive up to 8 free personal counseling sessions per year through CAPS. There are also various group sessions students can register for free, such as for stress management. Students can also make reservations for study spaces, light therapy, massage chairs, etc., and they have tons of other wellness resources listed on their website.
- My best strategy for college success is… to write on a planner the tasks I need to do each day so I don't get overwhelmed. I also believe that the most important thing is to take breaks and eat decent meals during studying in order to stay motivated.

- My best strategy for college success is… prioritizing tasks has been really helpful for me because often times there's a lot on my to-do list, but prioritizing more important tasks can be less overwhelming. Breaking down big assignments, like a report, into smaller tasks is also helpful, so you can avoid cramming on the last day.

- When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… how important it is to communicate with your professors. Everybody will struggle with at least one class or multiple in their college journey. Sometimes as hard as you try, you may not receive the results you want. However, being open and honest about these struggles with your professors can really save your efforts. Ultimately, everybody wants to see you succeed and if you are putting your best foot forward and being proactive, it will certainly not go unnoticed.

At the same time, while a social life is necessary, good performance in school is our responsibility. Above all, physical and mental health should never be compromised.
