Hypothesis

A coalition of some of the world’s leading publishers, platforms, libraries, educational institutions, and technology organizations have created an open, interoperable annotation layer over digital content. Simply put, annotating all knowledge.

What is Hypothesis?

The mission of Hypothesis is "to enable a conversation over the world's knowledge."  That is a conversation layer over the entire web that works everywhere, without needing implementation by any underlying site.

How does Hypothesis work?

Using annotation, Hypothesis enables sentence-level note taking or critique on top of classroom reading, news, blogs, scientific articles, books, terms of service, ballot initiatives, legislation and more.

Hypothesis is based on the annotation standards for digital documents developed by the W3C Web Annotation Working Group. Hypothesis partners with developers, publishers, academic institutions, researchers, and individuals to develop a platform for the next generation of read-write web applications.
