Research at SJSU

Of the 64 academic departments at SJSU, 34 departments included at least one faculty/staff that is actively pursuing and conducting research, have submitted research proposals, or have been awarded grants relating to sustainability. And of the 576 SJSU faculty/staff engaged in research, 97 are engaged in sustainability research.  Several SJSU faculties have received notable achievements in their sustainability research in recent years. Two prime examples include standout faculty researchers, Craig Clements and Lynne Trulio.

Sustainability Focused Research Centers

Institute for the Study of Sport, Society, and Social Change

Encourages, creates and facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration to illuminate the substance, dynamics, and significance of the institution of sport as a social sphere within which issues of power and ideology are created, reaffirmed and challenged. It is dedicated to research, analysis and education focused on the intersection of sport and social justice with activities guided by the theoretical, methodological and applied research perspectives and traditions of the sociology of sport.

Mineta Transportation Institute

Focuses on international surface transportation policy issues as related to three primary responsibilities: research, education, and technology transfer. MTI receives policy oversight from an internationally respected board of trustees who represent all of the major transportation modes.

One project the MTI is working on is the Spartan Superway, a solar-powered automated transportation network. Read more about the project here and how it can be scaled up to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector.

Center for the Development of Recycling

A national clearinghouse for recycling information and for applied waste management research aimed to increase the scope and availability of recycling information and to increase the effectiveness of recycling as a solid waste management strategy.

Moss Landing Marine Labs

"Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) administers the Master of Science in marine science program for California State Universities in northern and central California, and is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in both education and research. An outfitted marine operations department, active research diving program and state of the art equipment allow for cutting edge research in a wide variety of disciplines including: marine ecology; the biology of marine plants, invertebrates, fishes, turtles, birds and mammals; oceanography and marine geology; chemistry and biogeochemistry. MLML is known for a hands-on, field-oriented approach which places our students, faculty, researchers and staff at the frontiers of marine science worldwide where discoveries are being made. MLML provides the skills and training so students become successful scientists, teachers and resource managers serving societal needs involving marine issues."
