Since 1986, the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies at San Jose State University has published a regular periodical devoted to Beethoven that includes substantial essays, reviews of new books, scores, recordings, and auction reports.
From 1986 until 1994, the publication was titled The Beethoven Newsletter. In 1995, beginning with Vol. 10, the title was changed to The Beethoven Journal.
2020 marks the relaunch of the center’s periodical as two separate publications:
- The Beethoven Newsletter is published twice a year, beginning with Summer 2020.
- The Beethoven Journal will move to an online open-access format, hosted by SJSU’s Scholarworks, beginning with Vol. 35 (projected in 2021). More information about The Beethoven Journal’s new publication schedule will follow in due course.
The Beethoven Newsletter
The Beethoven Newsletter is intended for everyone interested in Beethoven and his music – from university professors and performers to devoted amateurs and music lovers.
The newsletter contains reports, reviews, and shorter scholarly articles, and will be published twice a year in summer and winter beginning with Summer 2020.
A subscription to The Beethoven Newsletter is included as part of membership of the American Beethoven Society.
Please note that the Summer 2020 issue is online-only, as the Beethoven Center’s office is currently closed, restricting our ability to send bulk mail.
The Beethoven Journal
Volume 34 No. 2 (Winter 2019) was the last printed version of The Beethoven Journal.
Beginning with Vol. 35, The Beethoven Journal will be relaunched as a peer-reviewed scholarly journal devoted to new research on Beethoven. The journal will be published in an open-access format, meaning that the content will be available online to Beethoven scholars and enthusiasts around the world, free of charge. The first online issue is projected in 2021.
Please email potential articles for The Beethoven Newsletter or The Beethoven Journal to the editor, Dr. Erica Buurman.
To subscribe to The Beethoven Newsletter, join the American Beethoven Society. The subscription is included in the cost of membership.
We are no longer accepting separate subscriptions for The Beethoven Journal, since starting in 2021 this will be available online in an open-access format.
Online access to past issues of The Beethoven Journal is currently available through the subscription database ProQuest.
