Student Growth and Development
The Student Union, Inc. supports student success beyond the classroom by creating opportunities for leadership, collaboration, professional development, and community engagement. Through campus employment, programs, services, and events, students gain valuable skills that contribute to their academic, personal, and professional growth.
🎓University Learning Goals (ULG)
1. Specialized Knowledge
- Mastered the depth of knowledge required for a degree, as identified by its program learning outcomes.
2. Broad Integrative Knowledge
- Mastery in each step of an investigative, creative or practical project (i.e. brainstorming, planning, formulating hypotheses or complex questions, designing, creating, completing, and communicating).
- An understanding of the implications of results or findings from a particular work in a societal context (i.e. social or economic implications of a scientific finding).
- Students graduating with a baccalaureate degree will have demonstrated an understanding of critical components of broad academic areas, the arts, humanities, social sciences, and sciences and their integration.
3. Intellectual Skills
- Fluency in the use of specific theories, tools, technology and graphical representation.
- Skills and abilities necessary for life-long learning: critical and creative thinking, effective communication, conscientious information gathering and processing, mastery of quantitative methodologies, and the ability to engage effectively in collaborative activities.
4. Social and Global Responsibilities
- The ability to act intentionally and ethically to address a global or local problem in an informed manner with a multicultural and historical perspective and a clear understanding of societal and civic responsibilities.
- Diverse and global perspectives through engagement with the multidimensional SJSU community.
🌎Program (Student Union Corporation) Learning Outcomes (PLO)
1. Intellectual Skills
Student employees will demonstrate continual growth as professional individuals by displaying the ability to effectively communicate, think critically, and make decisions when working with a wide range of internal and external clientele. (Maps to ULG #3)
2. Applied Learning
Student employees will demonstrate the ability to apply academic knowledge gained in the classroom to hands-on opportunities in the workplace, such as problem solving, skill expansion, and deadline-oriented productivity. (Maps to ULG #4)
3. Social and Global Responsibility
Employees and Students will be exposed to a wide range of diverse cultural, racial and gender backgrounds through events and programs hosted by the Student Union, Inc. (Maps to ULG #5)
4. Broad Integrative Knowledge
Student Union, Inc., through its facilities and services, will identify accomplishments, and build on those accomplishments; will identify deficiencies, analyze them and make corrections. (Maps to ULG #2)
