Graduation Requirements

While this page summarizes most of the policies and steps that a graduate student must follow to get their degree, it does not replace the university catalog which covers them in greater detail. For further information on any of the policies please visit the online catalog.

Brief Outline of Steps to Completing MSME

  1. If you are admitted conditionally or provisionally classified, you need to file a Change of Classification form [pdf] and have the ME office process it.
  2. Satisfy the GWAR requirement.
  3. File a Candidacy Form.
  4. Complete the required 30 units per MSME Program
  5. Apply for graduation. See the video posted by GAPE
  6. Complete the courses listed on your Candidacy form.
  7. Complete all the required MSME courses within the seven-year limit.
  8. Maintain a minimum grade point average of a 3.0 ("B") in the courses listed on your candidacy form, and an overall cumulative grade point average of a 3.0.

Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR)

All MSME students must satisfy the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR). This requirement must be completed before a student can be admitted to candidacy.

The ME Department recommends that all current MSME students satisfy the GWAR requirement by taking ME 201. Registration for ME 201 is controlled by department consent, and students should contact the course instructor to request a permission number. There are some limited alternatives that depend on when you started your MS program, and the full description of requirements is in the SJSU Catalog at:
