Sexual and Reproductive Health

Primary care related gynecological services are available to all SJSU students. We have physicians and nurse practitioners trained in routine gynecological care and examinations, including screening and treatment of sexually transmitted illnesses (STI's), information and education on sexuality, birth control methods, and menopause. Fees may be applicable. To schedule an appointment, call 408-924-6122. Bring a picture I.D. to every Student Health Center visit.

Health screening examinations are generally recommended based on age and risk factors, rather than routine yearly physicals.

Please see the Patient Guide For Sensitive Exams to best understand your options should you need an exam of this nature.

Different Types of Exams

Pap Smear

  • Screening test for cervical cancer
  • Schedule first Pap smear after age 21
  • Please schedule your Pap smear exam when you are not menstruating
  • 48 hours prior to your exam, please DO NOT douche, have sexual intercourse, or use any vaginal medications, creams, jellies, foams, suppositories, or tampons

Pelvic Examinations

  • Can be done without a Pap smear to assess certain female health-related concerns
  • These exams involve assessment of gynecologic organs

Breast Cancer Screening

  • Clinical breast exam is usually performed along with the Pap smear
  • The American Cancer Society recommends screening mammography starting at age 40 and suggests breast self-examination (BSE) as an option for women starting in their 20's
  • Information about BSE can be provided at the Student Health Center upon request

Birth Control Pills (BCPs)

  • May be prescribed and used prior to scheduling your first Pap smear
  • If you are currently taking BCP's, an emergency pack of pills can be prescribed if needed before your next Pap smear is scheduled
  • Referrals to specialists are made when indicated

Pregnancy Options

Senate Bill (SB) 24 requires all CSU campuses to offer medication abortion to students. If you receive a positive pregnancy test during an exam at the Student Wellness Center, we’ll provide you with pregnancy options counseling and, if requested, medication abortion from trusted SJSU healthcare providers. Students will also receive follow-up care.

Medication abortion is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for termination of pregnancies within the first 10 weeks of gestation.

Pregnancy examination has been and will remain free for students in the Student Wellness Center. The cost of prescriptions, including medication abortion, are at the student’s expense. The cost of the prescription for medication abortion will be approximately $50.

Medication abortion prescriptions can be filled at the Student Wellness Center or a preferred pharmacy.
