Psychology (Doctoral) Training

In this section:

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers training experiences for graduate students enrolled in doctoral programs in Clinical or Counseling Psychology. We offer advanced practicum counselor positions, Psychology Internship in Health Service Psychology, and Multicultural Post-doctoral Residencies.

A pertinent goal of the SJSU Psychology (Doctoral) Training Program is to provide high quality learning experiences to graduate students and post graduate students in counseling and clinical psychology in preparation for a career in mental health, particularly in working with a very diverse university population.

To help attain this goal, the counseling faculty has a strong commitment to supervise, teach, and mentor our trainees. We are proud members of the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA) - a national organization for training programs within university counseling centers. Our pre-doctoral internship program is recognized as a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Council (APPIC) and is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).

We are committed to training doctoral students for work in a diverse world. While the field of psychology as a whole has embraced the importance of multicultural awareness and competence, this is a commitment that we reaffirm daily. We live and work in the midst of one of the most diverse communities in the world.

We believe that as important as skills training is, it is important to teach that learning never stops. As ethical practitioners, we are all bound to continue learning from the researchers and scholars in our field. We ourselves look forward to the opportunity to learn from and with our trainees each year.
