Native American Items

About AB 275 and San José State University

In September 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom approved AB 275, a law that updated CalNAGPRA (California Native American Graves and Repatriation Act) regarding the status of human remains, funerary objects or sacred objects associated with Native American Cultural Heritage. Specifically, the law requires California entities, such as museums and universities, to, among other tasks, prepare an inventory of all such items by January 1, 2022, in anticipation of their ultimate return to their Tribes of origin. San José State University is actively engaging with Tribal communities as it also complies with all aspects of CalNAGPRA.
