Mahshid Modares is a documentary filmmaker and film scholar specializing in social documentation, film censorship and propaganda, and the cinema of Iran and the greater Middle East. She is completing her Ph.D. in Film and Digital Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where her dissertation, Militant Cinema and Romanticizing History in Iran, accompanies her documentary Cinema Rex, 1978: With No History. She also holds an M.F.A. in Social Documentation from UCSC, an M.A. in Art History and Visual Culture from SJSU, and a B.F.A. in Visual Arts from Azad University. Her award-winning films Sanctions on the Sky and Sanctions on Us, both produced in traditional and interactive formats, have screened at festivals worldwide, earning honors including a Silver Anthem Award for Human and Civil Rights, a Webby nomination, and multiple Best Documentary and Human Rights awards. A widely published writer, she has contributed peer-reviewed scholarship to Cinema Iranica, The International Journal of the Arts in Society, and several other journals.
