Sanctuary City by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok is a powerful and deeply human story that shines a light on the sacrifices, hopes, and resilience of DREAMers striving to build a future in the only country they have ever called home.
In the shadow of post-9/11 Newark, New Jersey, two teenagers brought to the United States as children find solace and strength in one another as they navigate the challenges of growing up undocumented. When G becomes a U.S. citizen, she and her lifelong friend B devise a plan that could secure his future: marriage. What begins as an act of devotion and hope soon becomes a test of loyalty, identity, and the limits of the promises we make to those we love.
Spanning the formative years of adolescence and early adulthood, Sanctuary City captures the joy, vulnerability, and resilience of young people determined to create a life in the only home they have ever known. With compassion, humor, and emotional depth, Majok’s richly theatrical work sheds light on the personal costs of immigration policy while celebrating the enduring power of human connection.
