Timpany Center Status due to Orange Tier
As of 10/15/2020
The Timpany Center, a non-profit educational and therapeutic service center that serves community members through a partnership between San José State University Research Foundation (SJSURF) and Santa Clara County, has been closed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. While Santa Clara County has moved to the Moderate (orange) tier in California’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy criteria system, the Timpany Center will continue to be closed to ensure the safety and well-being of its community.
Reasons for Why the Timpany Center Remains Closed
- With most patrons of the Timpany Center falling under high-risk categories due to COVID-19, we will only reopen when we can ensure the safety of everyone who visits the center.
- The State’s Guidance for Gyms and Fitness Centers [pdf] states that certain groups, including people aged 65 or older and those with serious underlying medical conditions, are at higher risk of hospitalization and serious complications.
- Transmission is most likely when people are in close contact or in a poorly ventilated area with an infected person, even if that person does not have any symptoms or has not yet developed symptoms.
It is important to note that even if the county’s guidelines allow for limited indoor pool operation, SJSURF will use critical judgement in assessing the safety and the financial viability of reopening and operating the Timpany Center. The safety and well-being of our community and the long-term sustainability of the Timpany Center are our highest priority.
SJSU and SJSURF understand the importance of the Timpany Center to our community. Although it is a tough decision, keeping the center closed now increases the likelihood of a stronger return for Timpany Center.
Clarification of Facilities & Administrative Charges and Distribution - April 23, 2020
An integral part of every proposal budget, facilities and administrative (F&A) costs are general operating expenses and costs incurred by both San José State University and the SJSU Research Foundation in support of sponsored programs that are not readily associated with a single project, account, or transaction. In his April 23, 2020 F&A Communication [pdf], San José State University Research and Innovation Vice President and SJSU Research Foundation Board of Directors President, Mohamed Abousalem provides clarification of F&A charges and distribution.
