Test Requirements

English Language Proficiency Exam:

An English Language Proficiency Exam (TOEFL, Academic IELTS, or Academic PTE) is required for all graduate and post-baccalaureate applicants, regardless of citizenship, whose native language is not English and whose preparatory education was principally in a language other than English.

SJSU’s interprets this to mean that the higher education institution is located in a country in which English is the official language (the daily medium of communication of the majority of residents) and that the students receive academic instruction in all subjects (except foreign language courses) at all levels of education in English.  Therefore, letters attesting to English as the principal medium of instruction from institutions in countries where English is not the official language, will not be accepted.

Countries currently meeting the above requirement are: the U.S., U.S. Territories, Canada – excluding Quebec, Commonwealth Caribbean (Antigua, Bahamas, Belize Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago), U.K. (England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales), Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines.

Minimum scores are listed below.

ELP scores

Test scores must be fewer than two years old and sent directly from the testing agency to San José State University.

*Please note:  there are no exemptions for lower scores.  Scores must be received by the document deadline for an applicant's program.  Also, some programs require higher than the minimum score.  See mimimum department scores below.

NOTE: If your name or birthdate is different from what you listed on your university application, please notify our offices by emailing admissions@sjsu.edu and include an explanation.
