How to Contact the ESSC
Live In-person Help Desk
You can visit our office in the Engineering building on the 1st floor in ENG 116 to talk to a peer advisor for quick questions during most of our open business hours. Bring your student Tower ID card. Service is first-come, first-served. Find our office on the map of the College of Engineering building [pdf].
Our normal business days and hours, unless otherwise posted, are:
Monday through Friday
8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon
1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
(closed for lunch daily 12:00 - 1:00)
Drop-in advising in person with professional advisors at the ESSC is available per our in-person drop-in calendar.
Drop-in advising is intended for quick questions (e.g. removing holds, explaining policies, course recommendation) during a 5-minute conversation. More in-depth advising requires an appointment.
You can make appointments with an ESSC advisor or Career Counselor via Spartan Connect. Appointments are virtual via Zoom or in-person at the ESSC office. Selecting your appointment topic will provide a list of available advisors and appointment slots.
Advisors handle more involved topics such as:
- Academic Plan and Goals
- Change of Major
- GE checklists / advising
- Major Advising (A full list of major advising services can be found in our Major Advising page)
- University Withdrawal
- Transfer Credit Equivalency
Advisors also handle less involved topics such as:
- Form Signatures
- Policy Clarification
- Check in Meeting
- Follow-up Meeting
- Registration questions
- Hold removal status
See the full list of our Advising Service Options.
Outside of business hours or anytime, you can contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org for short clarification of policies already on our web site.
Always include your SJSU student ID number and a brief description of your question or issue.
You can also contact us if you:
- are unsure about the length of your inquiry and whether an appointment is necessary
- need assistance scheduling an appointment
- have a Plan of Study to be reviewed
Peer advisors answer our main ESSC phone line (408-924-3990) during normal business hours. You might also consider our virtual or in-person drop-in advising with professional advisors (detailed above) for quick questions.
If your issue is detailed or complicated, or will take more than 5-10 minutes to discuss, please make an advising appointment via Spartan Connect.
Frosh: If you are aware of your orientation advisor, please contact him/her/them directly, through email or Spartan Connect. This will yield the fastest, most direct response. You can identify your advisor in the Canvas course Academic Success in the College of Engineering (Cohort 2021-2022).
Transfer: Usually your major department will provide academic advising; some departments have major advising through the ESSC (see our Major Advising page).
