Bike to SJSU

Bicycling can be a convenient and dependable form of transportation. Silicon Valley is an ideal place for bicycling, with its mild weather and relatively flat topography.

Bicycle Reimbursement Program

Cycling on Campus

According to the SJSU Presidential Directive 2007-06 [pdf], bicycles are allowed on most pathways except where appropriate dismount signs are posted or when there's no clear path due to crowding. Bicyclists are expected to follow these "common courtesy" rules:

Always yield to pedestrians.
Drive at an appropriate speed according to existing conditions, not to exceed the campus speed limit for all vehicles of five (5) mph.
Drive in an appropriate manner that does not interfere with pedestrians or campus facilities vehicular traffic.
Walk your vehicle when there is no clear path ahead, such as when a walkway is too crowded with pedestrians or other obstructions.
Do not ride in an acrobatic or stunting manner, i.e. activities causing one or more sets of wheels to leave the ground or other surfaces intended for pedestrian or vehicular travel.
Do not ride on stairs; ramps, railings, vegetation, benches, tables, planters, or other surfaces not intended for vehicular travel.
Do not ride inside University buildings.
Dismount and walk vehicle where appropriate signs are posted. Posted dismount areas will be in high pedestrian traffic areas with small or obstructed pathways.
E-bikes and other motorized vehicles are not permitted to be ridden on campus.

Bicycle Parking On Campus

You can park your bike at any of the open bike racks. The open racks are purchased by UPD Parking Services and maintained by SJSU Facilities Development and Operation (FD&O).

For additional security, you can park your bike at any of the six on campus Bicycle Enclosures managed by AS Transportation Solutions. Bike parking is for daily use. Over night parking or long term storage is not permitted. Visit our bicycle enclosure page for information on how to get an access key.

Note: It is illegal to lock bicycles to the bike enclosure fence, railings, benches, poles, trees, tables, or park bikes anywhere that might block an entrance/ exit to a building, office, or area. The University Police will impound the bikes in violation.

Although the Bicycle Enclosures at SJSU provide an additional layer of security, bicycle owners are responsible for appropriately securing their bike inside the enclosures. Lock your bicycle using a solid U-lock. Most bike thefts occur on bicycles with weaker cable locks. Watch this video to learn how to properly lock your bike using a U-Lock.

Bike Parking For Housing Students

For Washburn Hall: Washburn Hall has bike racks in their patio where residents may park their bikes (day & overnight use) and can request access for the cage in the Campus Village garage for protected storage.

For Joe West: Residents need to contact their Residential Life Coordinator in order to gain access to the bike cage so they may park their bike.

For CVA, CVB, CVC, and CV2: All residents, except those that live in Joe West, must come to the housing office on the 2nd floor of CVB, to fill out a bike enclosure request form. CVA/CVB/CVC have access to the bike cage in the CV garage and CV2 residents have access to the bike cage in CV2. There is no fee. There is no long term storage.

NOTE: Residents cannot store their bikes in their rooms.

Bikes on Transit

Biking can be a great way to travel from your home to transit stations and stops. It's a great way to get to transit without a car if you don't have any transit lines near you. Check your public transit provider for the bicycle services that fit your trip before making your commute. All transit agencies allow bikes on transit. Here are their specifc policies and guidelines:

VTA: VTA has equipped all buses with exterior bike racks that can accommodate up to two bicycles.All light rail trains are equipped with bike racks in the center of the train car. Passengers should load their bikes on the rack and can sit in the area to keep an eye on it. Up to four bikes may be stored on racks, with an additional two allowed to stand in the articulated part of the light rail train.
Highway 17 Express: Most Highway 17 Express buses have racks that can hold up to three bicycles. On VTA and Highway 17 Express, up to two bicycles may be allowed inside the bus subject to the driver's discretion and passenger loads.
BART: On BART, all bike owners must hold their bikes while riding trains. Bikes are allowed on all cars except during commute hours (7:00 to 9:00 AM and 4:30 to 6:30 PM, weekdays), when bikes are not allowed in the first three cars of any train.
Caltrain: To bring your bike on Caltrain, you need to board one of the bike cars. These cars have yellow “Bike Car” sign near the doors indicating which train cars allow bikes on board.
ACE Train: Like Caltrain, ACE train also has bike cars. Look for the “Bike Car” signs to know which cars have bike stalls.

Shower Facilities for Bicycle Commuters

For bike commuters who are looking for showers, students have free access to the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center (SRAC) and all faculty, staff, and students can utilize the showers and lockers in the Kinesiology department in Spartan Complex (SPX 128) which are open during regular business hours.
