How to Apply

Applying to the SJSU School of Music and Dance as a potential music major is a four-step process:

  1. Apply to SJSU via CalState Apply before November 1, 2021 for entrance fall '22 for undergraduate students, or before April 15, 2022 for graduate students;
  2. After you're accepted to SJSU, reply to the email you'll receive from the School in late December/early January about auditions, and complete the survey.
  3. Audition for the School — On-campus auditions will be held Saturday, February 12, 2022; virtual auditions will be held Saturday, February 26, 2022.
  4. After you receive your audition results, go to your @SJSU address and select "Intent to Enroll"!

The Application Process

Undergraduate

Students who have selected SJSU as one of their CSU campuses must audition specifically for the music program in order to become music majors. All new students must complete an entrance audition in their primary applied area. Audition and scholarship information can be found on the Entrance Audition page, and repertoire suggestions can be found on Suggested Musical Repertoire page.

Sign-up for an Audition Time

NEW: Application to San José State University (must have been completed by December 15, 2020 for fall '21)

Applicants must apply online for admission to San José State University. Each applicant will receive a User ID and Password via e-mail about two weeks after the application is submitted. With those two items, the applicant may login at MySJSU and check his or her application status; be sure to check often, as MySJSU is School’s primary mode of communication with applicants. All academic transcripts must be sent to SJSU Admissions office.

Audition for the School of Music

Graduate

Admission to the University

Prospective graduate students apply online to the both San José State University and the School of Music and Dance through Cal State Apply.

**Please state your proposed area emphasis, and complete the personal statement.**

All required transcripts and supporting documents must be sent directly to the University.

Apply at Cal State Apply. Payment of the CSU Application Fee of $55 will be accepted by credit card or paypal only. The payment must be made in order to submit your Cal State Apply university application.

Application Deadlines

Spring 2021

The application deadline for Spring 2021 opens August 1, 2020, with a deadline for completed applications of November 1, 2020.

Fall 2021

The application deadline for Fall 2021 opens October 1, 2020, with a deadline for applications of May 1, 2021.

Admission to the School of Music and Dance

The School of Music and Dance additionally requires:

  • Three letters of recommendation sent directly to the area coordinators of your area of interest.
  • An audition, submission of a portfolio of work, and/or interview (depending on the area requirements) with the applicable area coordinator.

The School of Music and Dance does not require the GRE.

Three-Summer Master's Program in Music Education

Prospective students apply online to the both San José State University and the School of Music and Dance through Cal State Apply. Please state your proposed area of emphasis as music education/three summer master's, and complete the personal statement. All required transcripts and supporting documents must be sent directly to the University. The deadline for domestic students is April 15, 2021; for international students, February 1, 2021.
