Sent: August 19, 2026
From: Vincent J. Del Casino, Jr., Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
This message was sent to all faculty, staff, and managers in the College of Health and Human Sciences.
Dear Colleagues,
The Office of the Provost is launching a national search for the next Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences.
I am seeking nominations for members to serve on this search committee. In accordance with University Policy S16-8, search committees for college deans shall be composed of nine members, including faculty, staff, a student, a dean, and one member of the community or an SJSU administrator (MPP). Each chair should encourage faculty and staff from their department to serve on the search committee so that the resulting ballots, to the extent possible, reflect the diverse nature of the programs, students, faculty, and staff in the college and across the campus.
I invite you to nominate yourself or others who are interested in serving in this important process. Nominations must include a written statement describing the nominee’s interest in and qualifications for serving on the search committee, including their perspectives on diversity and inclusion.
Submit the nomination form by Friday, August 28, 2026.
After nominations are received, elections will be conducted for the faculty and staff positions as outlined below. Following the elections and before finalizing appointments, the Provost shall review the committee membership and may consult with the Academic Senate Executive Committee, in accordance with University Policy S16-8.
Questions about the search process should be directed to Jessica Larsen at jessica.larsen@sjsu.edu.
Five Faculty Positions, including Two Chairs
Nominees may be department chairs, tenured or tenure-track faculty, or lecturers. Five faculty members, at least four of whom must be tenured and at least two of whom must be department chairs, will be elected by and from the College of Health and Human Sciences faculty. No more than two faculty members may be elected from any one department.
One Staff Position
Staff members may self-nominate or be nominated by others. A college-wide staff election will be conducted to select the staff representative who will serve on the committee.
One Student Position
Each department shall nominate one student from among its majors. The Provost shall appoint one student representative from among those nominated.
One Dean Position
The Provost shall appoint one dean representative from outside the College of Health and Human Sciences.
One SJSU Administrator or Community Member
Members of the college are encouraged to nominate a community representative or SJSU administrator. Nominees should have experience or expertise relevant to one or more of the programs in the College of Health and Human Sciences and an understanding of the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The Provost shall appoint one community representative or SJSU administrator from among those nominated.
It is my hope that the search committee will be appointed in the next few weeks so that it can begin its work this Fall semester and make its recommendation to me by mid-spring 2027. This is a very important search, and the committee will play a critical role in identifying the College of Health and Human Sciences next leader.
Thank you, as always, for your outstanding work and service to San José State University. I look forward to working closely with the search committee to successfully identify the next dean.
Sincerely,
Vincent J. Del Casino, Jr.
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
