About the SmartPass
For just $25/semester, SJSU employees can enjoy unlimited rides on Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) local buses (Non-Express) and Light Rail lines with the SmartPass Clipper for the duration of the Spring semester plus Summer or Fall semester plus Winter session. SmartPass Express bus riders can board Express buses by paying a surcharge of $2.50 per ride as E-cash loaded on the SmartPass Clipper card. Visit Clipper's website to find out how to load value to your clipper card.
You can also use your SmartPass Clipper card on other Bay Area transit agencies' services such as Caltrain, BART, SF Muni, etc., provided that you load the clipper card with additional funds.
How to get your SmartPass Clipper?
Submit an online request, then visit the AS General Services Center located in the Student Union, East Wing, Room 1800 to pick up your SmartPass. The cost is $25 (plus $3 for the cost of Clipper card). The Center is open Monday through Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM during Fall and Spring semesters, and 8:00 - 12:00 PM, 1:00 - 4:00 PM during summer and winter sessions. You must present your Tower Card.
SJSU employee badge or key cards are not accepted!
- You will receive only one SmartPass Clipper Card. The card's serial number is linked to your name and Tower Card number.
- If you are in the fee waiver program, that program entitles you to instructional services but not to student services. Employees utilizing the fee waiver program will be charged the staff rate for student services including the SmartPass Clipper Card.
The SmartPass Clipper is also valid on Access Paratransit service for SJSU employees with disabilities who are unable to take bus or Light Rail.
When scanning your SmartPass Clipper on the VTA clipper readers, you will see a note that the pass is valid untill December 31st. You can ignore this date; your card will remain active based on your renewal.
If you are experiencing validation defect or other problems with your SmartPass Clipper card, do not discard the card, bring it to the AS Transportation Solutions' office for a free replacement.
Renewing your SmartPass Clipper
To renew your SmartPass, visit the General Services cashiering counter, present your SmartPass Clipper and Tower Card to the staff and pay the $25 renewal fee. All SmartPass Clippers that have not been renewed will be deactivated. The fee for renewing the SmartPass after the deadline is $35 ($25 renewal plus a $10 late renewal fee). Your SmartPass will be reactivated within 5-7 business days.
The Spring term is (Jan-June) and the Fall term is (July-December). You can renew as soon as the new term starts. Renewal notices will be sent via email when the semester starts. The deadline to renew for Spring is February and September for Fall.
If you are not able to renew in person, you can mail a check (payable to AS Transportation Solutions) with a copy of your Tower Card and SmartPass Clipper (serial number showing) to:

If you wish to skip a semester and will be returning to SJSU the next semester, you do not need to pay for your renewal. TS will process your request to reactivate your SmartPass the following semester.
SmartPass renewal fees are nonrefundable.

Important Information Regarding Clipper Card Virtualization
With the recent launch of the ability to add Clipper cards onto mobile wallets (Apple Wallet, Samsung Pay, etc.), we advise not to utilize this feature with the SmartPass, as this will void all discounts offered through the SmartPass program. If you have already done so, we advise you to come in to our office and request a replacement card.
