CSU AI Survey 2026
Starting in 2025, the California State University Chancellor’s Office has issued system-wide surveys on key issues affecting all 22 campuses. The surveys are intended to gauge current perceptions, sentiments and use of CSU or campus programs or systems and are open to all enrolled students, academic faculty and stateside staff. In 2025 and 2026, the CSU conducted a systemwide survey on the perceptions and use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
While the CSU is not prescriptive towards campuses in their reception, activity or decision-making stemming from survey responses, San José State University leadership is reviewing survey response data and considering potential impacts to university practices towards AI. Any and all decision-making will adhere to the university’s commitment to shared governance, the president’s priorities around Human-Centered Responsible AI, and will be made in either formal or informal proceedings with relevant stakeholder groups at SJSU.
As a systemwide survey, all respondents have been invited to participate to share their insights and feedback to the Chancellor’s Office and individual campus decision-making may or may not undergo changes from campus-specific responses. As this annual survey-fielding will continue to evolve, the CSU may opt to gather feedback on other topic areas, not exclusive to AI, in subsequent years.

In the 2025 CSU AI Survey, 2,617 students and 526 faculty/staff respondents provided their insights to 38 questions. San José State University leadership has reviewed the 2025 survey results. To assist with ongoing interpretation of survey data, university staff assesses key responses that directly speak to the President’s five key strategic priorities for the current academic year:

What is in the Summary
This Executive Summary identifies select responses directly connected to university-managed programming and AI systems governance that align with the strategic priorities framework adopted by the President.
Survey questions also ask general AI-related sentiments to both survey respondent groups - faculty/staff and students - as well as specific pedagogical impacts, societal and cultural perceptions that more directly align with personal, speculative ideas towards AI. This summary includes key questions that relate directly to SJSU’s approach and AI programming.

Leadership Response
While survey responses are directed primarily to the CSU Chancellor’s Office to inform how the system as a whole may decide to iterate on its approach towards deploying AI technologies and systems, SJSU leadership will review annual survey data and identify how results could impact decision-making.
Academic policy impacts will be reviewed and assessed through the Academic Senate for deliberations or decisions on university policies. Staff operations may be reviewed in conjunction with the University Leadership Council or other, relevant campus stakeholder groups.

San José State University’s approach to artificial intelligence spans a range of focus areas:
