Community Outreach

The Summer in the City Camp at San José State University was established in 2007 to offer junior high and high school students a week of musical immersion and social interaction with one another. Young musicians have the opportunity to work with instructors from San José State University School of Music and Dance as well as renowned musicians from across the country.

The Conducting Workshop is designed for teachers and choral conductors who have had previous experience conducting choirs and who wish to fine tune their rehearsal skills with hand, baton, face and other nonverbal communication. The Teaching Workshop is designed to enhance the choral director's skills and understanding of general rehearsal techniques, voice building and literature selection.

The Young Musicians' Project (YMP) provides private and group lessons to youth from low-income backgrounds. The instructors are San José State University music majors. Participants commit to weekly lessons and a recital at the end of each semester. Applications are accepted at the beginning of each semester.

The National String Project Consortium Receives Grant from The NAMM Foundation.
