Are you interested in playing with our bands, orchestras, or choirs in the upcoming semester? We offer a variety of exciting performing opportunities for both music majors and non-majors of a variety of skill levels.

Jazz Orchestra

Directed by Dr. Aaron Lington, the San José State University Jazz Orchestra provides students with an opportunity to perform traditional and contemporary repertoire from an array of composers spanning over 50 years of Jazz history. Students are selected for this ensemble by audition only.

Music Majors concentrating in jazz must participate in Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble or Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble as a major ensemble.

Jazz Ensembles

Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble

The Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble offers students an opportunity to learn and perform music from the Caribbean, Central and South America, and the African Diaspora under the direction of Professor Jeff Lewis. The Ensemble performs two full concerts per semester. Students are selected for this ensemble by audition only.

Music Majors concentrating in jazz must participate in either Jazz Orchestra or Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble as a major ensemble.

Jazz Combos

The University Jazz Combos perform a wide variety of jazz repertoire with emphasis on improvisation in a small group format. Under the direction of professors Jason Lewis and Dan Robbins, students have ample performance opportunities to perform throughout the semester both on and off campus.
